BLURB

Tellumo Magnamater is a fresh-out-of-college, first-year English teacher at Salt Lick County High School in Kentucky. He rides the bus to and from work, and every day he walks to the gym behind his small efficiency apartment to exercise. Perhaps because of being raised by two lesbians, Tellumo is attracted to older men. He sets his sights on fifty-something available bachelor Oliver Crumbly. But Tellumo isn’t the only resident interested in Oliver.

Peggy Tucker, a widow approaching her sixtieth birthday, is determined to marry again, and she thinks Oliver is her perfect match. Despite Tellumo and Peggy striking up a friendship at the gym, neither realizes they are interested in the same man. But the joke might be on both of them. Oliver, a retired history teacher, is the original crotchety old man who hates everything and everybody—especially young people.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Trish patted Tellumo’s leg. “Not seeing you since we dropped you off in August was hard, but we knew you’d be home for Christmas.” Trish shrugged. “The first without you was rough—especially since we’d been expecting to see you.”

“I really wanted to come home,” Tellumo said. “Snowmageddon messed with everyone’s holiday plans.”

Without conscious thought, Sawyer found himself in his car, driving up the long driveway to Hayden’s home. Sitting in a daze outside the spacious ranch-style dwelling, Sawyer fought his inner demons. He knew he was at Hayden’s for the wrong reasons. He wasn’t there because he loved Hayden; he wasn’t there because he wanted a future with the man. Sure, looking at his friend’s beautiful home, he could picture them cohabitating, raising their precious adopted children, having family and friends over for parties. But, it was just a scripted fantasy in his mind, there was no real feeling to it, no passion.

So, going to Hayden’s house, knowing what Hayden wanted from him, was wrong on many levels. His mind knew it; his heart knew it, but his body longed to be held, comforted, and loved on, even if just for a short time. For a couple hours, he would allow Hayden to help him escape, to stop feeling the pain and the hurt and the betrayal. Sawyer knew it would all come crashing down on him later, and he’d feel even worse for what he was going to let happen between them, but for the moment, escaping the pain would be worth it.
Lifting his head from the steering wheel, Sawyer glanced at the front door of Hayden’s house to see the man he’d quickly come to consider a friend standing and watching him. He appreciated that Hayden hung back and gave him time. Their eyes met and Hayden’s arm lifted in a slight wave. Sawyer’s slight smile was rueful as he watched Hayden turn around and walk into his home, leaving the door open behind him. The invitation was clear; Hayden was offering tonight, tomorrow, forever. All Sawyer had to do was accept.
“Tonight. All I can offer is tonight, Hayden. I’m so sorry.” His ragged whisper echoed in the silence of his car.
Walking to the door, Sawyer let all rational thought leave his mind. Hayden was his friend, he was offering to comfort him, no one was going to get hurt. “Yeah, keep telling yourself that, Morgan. He’s going to get hurt. Eventually.” He ground his teeth against the feeling of disgust he felt for himself.

A.D. Ellis is the award-winning author of two related collections of stories, A Torey Hope Novel Series and Torey Hope: The Later Years. Her debut novel, For Nicky, was voted #3 of the Top 50 Indie Books of 2014 by ReadFree.ly readers/voters. A.D.’s fourth novel, Loving Josie, was awarded the bronze medal in the contemporary romance category in the prestigious Readers’ Favorite 2015 International Book Awards.

Born and raised in a small farming town in southern Indiana, A.D. was an avid reader from the time she learned to read.  She could often be found curled up somewhere with her nose in a book. Most of her friends and family were not such book enthusiasts, so A.D. got used to dealing with snickers and joking comments about her constant reading habits. Truth be told, Ms. Ellis has always been the definition of a book nerd.

A.D. always dreamed of being a teacher. Graduating from Indiana State University in 1999 and earning a Master's Degree from Indiana Wesleyan in 2003, she met her goal of entering the world of education. A.D. has been teaching in the inner city of Indianapolis, Indiana for 17 years. She spent the majority of her 17 years in fourth grade, but has now taken on the challenges of teaching 3rd and 4th grade alternative education students. A.D. loves teaching fractions, variables, probability, and graphing in Math. She loves almost all aspects of English Language Arts. Figurative language, theme, making predictions, drawing conclusions, inference, context clues, making writing come to life, A.D. loves it all! Her students don't always share in that enthusiasm.

She met her husband in college in 1996 and they married in June of 2000. She lives in a south side suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana with her husband and two school-aged children. When she's not reading or writing with music blaring, she can be found shopping at thrift stores, reading to her children, and sweating at the gym in the very early mornings.

A.D. began her writing journey in October 2013, and she is grateful for the friends and support she's found along the way.

eBook Review: Signs of Desire by Tempeste O'Riley

Today I'm featuring a review and promo excerpt for Signs of Desire by Tempeste O'Riley. This is book 4 of the series, Desires Entwined, so if you haven't read the other books... don't read this one. You'll have a better reading experience if you know the backstories of the other characters. Good news, though, is there's a $25 DSP gift card or backlist book offered in the Rafflecopter contest, so you might get a chance to catch up to this book.

A fan of the series, especially the first book, I really enjoyed Signs of Desire. Each story in this series involves couples who really have to go the extra mile to be together--but it's always worth reading to follow their journey. The main characters for this book have one very important difference; Simon can hear but Adrian is deaf.

Both men have had a spotty record dating. Simon is a romance author who can't seem to find it himself. His trouble finding a man who wants him for him has led to a writing block, and he lets that push him into accepting an invite from friends to get away from the blinking cursor on a blank page. Adrian, a successful man who has put a phenomenal effort into fitting into "normal" society, has only found men who end up frustrated putting up with his inability to hear.

But Simon's different, or at least Adrian hopes he is. But can Adrian overcome the distrust that pushes him into punishing Simon for some of his past boyfriend's mistakes? Can Simon believe Adrian can care about him--just him--for no other reason? What happens when they both face hatred and discrimination for things they can't change; will it pull them closer or tear them apart?

As always, Tempeste has written a story that tugged at my heartstrings. I really cared about Adrian and Simon, and I was rooting for them to make it as a couple. The story has angst, but it's believable and realistic for a contemporary story; just enough to create conflict without being overdone. My biggest complaint is the completely random grammar call to capitalize Hearing and Deaf to describe people in the story. It felt wrong because those words are not proper nouns, yet they're being used that way to segregate characters based on a physical ability or lack thereof. A person is hearing or deaf--but that isn't who they are--so giving the words that level of import felt like it was deliberate to create a schism between the groups which didn't work for me as a reader. While that might work with another plot, Adrian doesn't want his partner to view him as incapable or capable based on whether or not he can hear, so to have him think that way in the writing was hypocritical.

SignsofDesireLG (2) SERIES: Desires Entwined
AUTHOR: Tempeste O’Riley
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
COVER ARTIST: Reese Dante
LENGTH: 200 Pages
RELEASE DATE: November 30, 2015
BLURB: Desires Entwined: Book Four Simon Tyler knows his job as a gay romance author makes his lack of faith in love more than a little ironic, but he’s tired of being used for his wallet. When a night out turns into a matchmaking scheme orchestrated by his best friends, Simon’s not thrilled, but since he’s not the target and he’s sworn off happily-ever-after anyway, he goes along with it… until he meets Adrian, the object of their efforts, and finds perhaps he hasn’t given up on love after all.

Professor Adrian Keys has tried to date Hearing men before, but being Deaf himself, he’s never had any success at making a connection. After his friends con him into going out and Adrian realizes it’s all an elaborate plan to set him up, he braces for yet another failure, only to discover there is a spark—except it’s not with the man his friends had in mind, but with Simon Tyler instead.

Not all their friends have found a way past their romantic failures, but Simon and Adrian might be on the path to happily-ever-after.

Excerpt

A tap to his shoulder pulled Adrian out of his musings. He turned and realized the server was back with their dinners and blushed at how entranced he’d been. He didn’t usually stare, hating when others did that to him. “Sorry.”

“No sorrys.” Chase hugged Adrian, then dug into his bowl of chicken and dumplings.

Simon waved to get Adrian’s attention and smiled when he looked up from his country-fried steak and mashed potatoes with white gravy. “Chase said you were his teacher before and are now a friend.” Adrian nodded. “How’d he convince you to go out with his skinny butt?”

Heat infused Adrian’s face as he laughed. “Chase was very sweet and asked nicely.”

“I love your laugh, by the way. It’s deep like your voice, kind of carefree.” Simon looked slightly sad. Adrian knew he’d had a hard time lately. Chase said he’d been cheated on a year ago and had refused to date since. Adrian knew the feeling, though he pushed the thought away, hoping not to dwell on why he was alone.

He ducked his head slightly. “Thanks? I don’t know how anyone sounds, even myself, so it’s always weird to get comments like that.”

“I said the same when we went out,” Chase commented. “But don’t let him fool you. He’s an excellent teacher and speaks in all his classes. He knows his voice is good.”

“No, I know it’s clear enough for you to understand. That’s something I work hard to make true, but I have never heard my voice, so I have no idea how I sound. And well…. Chase was the first person to ever say something like that.”

He worked regularly with various computer programs to improve and maintain his speech, knowing if he didn’t it could cost him his position at the college. He had always struggled to make sure he spoke well for Hearing people, considering his family’s opinion of his Deafness. His dad knew sign language, but his mom refused to learn, insisting he learn to be “normal.” Adrian had always thought that was extremely unfair, especially as a child. Considering his hatred of being dependent on others for his communication, he was thankful he could read lips and speak as well as he did.

“Then you know the wrong people, ’cause he’s right.” Simon nodded to emphasize his point, confusing Adrian more. Why would he be so determined with his compliments?

Shrugging off his curiosity, Adrian tried to push past the topic. “What do you do?”

Simon’s eyes tightened at the edges slightly, his shoulders drooping a little more. “I’m a writer.”

“He’s a romance author, and a damn good one,” Jamie, or James as he knew the guy’s actual name was, said. Chase talked about his best friend often, though this was the first they’d met. “Don’t let him talk down about what he does.”

“James, hush. He’s not interested in what kind of writing I do.”

“Yes, I am. I love to read. Would I know any of your work?” Adrian didn’t have a large collection of romances, but he had read some. He couldn’t think of any authors named Simon, though.

“You’re an author?” Grayson asked, turning to join their conversation.

The nod seemed reluctant, but the smile on Simon’s face, while small, looked genuine. “Yeah, I write under the name Tyler Jacobs, a pseudonym, but I have a few books out. But, um, I thought we were trying to get to know Adrian and Grayson, not more about boring ol’ me.”

Adrian looked to Grayson and back, then shrugged. “I thought it was so we could all get to know each other.”

“Actually, I think Chase was trying to play matchmaker,” Rhys said, shoving Chase playfully.

“Matchmaker?” Adrian asked. Whom was he trying to set up with whom? And why?

Chase scowled and swatted Rhys. “I was hoping to introduce a few new friends and hoped everyone got on well, brat.” Chase reached out and patted Adrian’s hand, confusing him further. “I swear, I’m not trying to push you if you don’t want to date anyone right now.”

“Just who were you hoping to match up?” Dale asked, smirking as he stared at Chase.

Honestly, Adrian wanted to know that as well. It was obvious Chase meant to fix him up with one of his other friends, but he couldn’t imagine which one. James was married, Chase was happily with Rhys, and he didn’t know Simon, Dale, or Grayson beyond what he’d learned of them since he’d arrived, really.

Only two of the people at the table even interested him, truth be told, but he couldn’t figure out why anyone would try to set him up with either man. In Adrian’s experience, most Hearing people didn’t overly like dealing with having a Deaf partner. His few exes certainly hadn’t, no matter what he did to seem more “normal.”

Chase shook his head, clamping his lips closed as he glared at Rhys.

“Chase?” Adrian said and signed. “Who were you hoping to set me up with and why?”

Their eyes locked for a few moments before Chase looked away, his shoulders drooping. After a moment, Chase turned back to face Adrian and replied, “Grayson. He’s in IT, like you and I are, he’s super loyal and really cute in that quiet reserved-guy kind of way.”

“Grayson?” Well, he was handsome and seemed nice, if a little stoic. Adrian didn’t know how to feel about Chase trying to set him up with one of his friends, though. “I can get my own dates, Chase.”

“I know that. It…. Grayson is really nice, and I’d love to see Rhys’s buddy happy. And I like you, but we’re not right for each other, either. I thought of you two, though. You’d make a beautiful couple. His Native American features and your slightly Asian ones….”

BTBanner_Travels

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Hiking, camping, iFly (indoor skydiving), going to football games, watching soccer. All sorts of outdoor things. J
Do you have any writing rituals?
Nope.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Being able to explore new worlds and watch how readers interact with those worlds.
If you could give advice to yourself when you first started writing, what would it be?
To not be afraid to fight for something in a story you know belongs.
Did something specific inspire you to write Eternity in the Tides?
Not really. We had a specific theme – fall – for the anthology and I had to decide what I wanted to write about from there. I knew I wanted to write an urban fantasy, and I also knew I was looking to create a twist on myth/folklore I knew. It was with those general concepts I created Zak and Bo then plunged into the story.
What kind of research did you do into the medical aspects of the disabling injured Zak is learning to live with?
One of my uncles was in an accident like the one Zak was in—that's actually what inspired Zak's misfortune. Fortunately for my uncle, his recovery went much better than Zak's. I also work in a hospital with many doctors and nurses so I had a lot of resources to draw on from there.
How did you come up with the title?
I did not come up with the title. I was actually struggling to find one. I had several working titles and hated them all. None of them conveyed what I wanted them to about the story. Then one day I was in a chat group with my friends and everyone pitched in to try and figure it out. I gave them the basic theme and the feelings I wanted the title to invoke. We debated it for a while, then my friend Silvia Violet popped in, read the convo (to catch up), and suggested the title. Me: PERFECT.
Did the characters or the plot come to you first?
I had the basic concepts of the characters I wanted to work with, then an idea of what I wanted the story to be about. I flushed out the idea before setting forth on the characters… so a little of both? *Smiles*
What’s next for you?
Two projects. 1. I am picking my Finding Peace series back up – now that all professional obligations are out of the way. My poor story has been picked up and on a lot and needs attention. 2. Another urban fantasy is in the works. We'll see what happens.
There is also a small surprise project coming from the MCB authors so keep an eye out for that sometime next year.

A Bear’s Bear by Toni Griffin

Matthew Warner's been a Chicago Bears fan as far back as he can remember. What other team was a young bear shifter from the Smokey Mountains supposed to root for? When his college friend gets tickets to the next home game, Matthew jumps at the chance for a holiday. It's his favorite time of year and Nic promises him pumpkin carving and a visit to the world's largest corn maze, what more could he want?

What Matthew doesn’t expect is finding out the defensive tackle for the Bears is his mate. Between fainting at the realization, meeting family, and dealing with the media fallout of his mate's coming out Matthew is in for a hell of a rocky Halloween.

The Autumn Lands by J. Scott Coatsworth

Jerrith is running. Kissed by an elf, he can't remain in his hometown of Althos anymore. Not that he wanted to stay.

Caspian still hasn't figured out why he kissed Jerrith, but he's running too. Since he was exiled from the Autumn Lands, his past has been hazy, and his future uncertain. But when a stray memory brings things into focus, the two decide to run toward something together. What they uncover will change how they see the world, and themselves, forever.

Beside a Black Tarn by Angel Martinez

When Shax stumbles across rumors of an experimental house that responds to the occupant’s brain functions, creating scenarios to please and delight, naturally he wants to steal it.  But with the return of a troubled and hunted Julian Parallax and an overabundance of Poe references, even Shax’s scheming may not be enough to get the Brimstone crew out alive this time.

Eternity in the Tides by Freddy MacKay

Autumn has always been Zak's favorite season for hiking and camping. Not to mention breathing in all that crisp fall air and sitting around toasty bonfires. That all changed year and a half ago when a rich prick high on prescription pills sideswiped Zak while he was out biking.

Now his days are filled with pain and limited mobility. No more camping. No more trails. Zak's life as he knew it is gone forever.

Back at his beloved stomping grounds, Zak is ready to say hello and goodbye one last time. But when a cry from the frigid Lake Superior waters throws him into the role of a rescuer, more than just his life hangs in the balance. Little did Zak know how much one person giving a damn mattered to him.

A Bear’s Bear by Toni Griffin

"Take a seat," Christian said as he closed the door behind them. The Alpha was acting strangely, especially when he checked the hall just before the door closed. Christian walked over to where Matthew was sitting. Instead of taking a seat behind the desk as Matthew would have expected, Christian hiked a leg and leaned against the edge of the desk just to the side of him.

"Thank you for taking a minute to speak with me."

"Anything you need, Alpha." Matthew nodded. His hands were already sweating. Matthew rubbed them back and forth on his pants, hoping to dry them.

"There's no reason to be nervous," Christian assured him, chuckling lightly. "You've done nothing wrong."
Matthew nodded as he sighed in relief.

"I know we don't know each other very well," Christian started and Matthew nodded again. "However, you've known my younger brother for years."

"I have. He's a good guy."

"He is. Can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but I love him nonetheless." Christian chuckled.

Matthew was too nervous to do anything more than smile.

"Anyway, I happened to overhear a conversation you had earlier on the phone."

Matthew swallowed and fisted the denim of his jeans in his hands. Would Christian stop him from going on vacation? Was there a sleuth in Chicago? Did he need to notify them of his travel plans?

"Yes?" he asked quietly.

"You're planning to travel to Chicago, is that correct?"

Matthew nodded slowly.

"Excellent."

Matthew furrowed his brows. Why on earth would Christian think his travel plans were excellent? "I don't understand."

"I was wondering if you wouldn't mind doing me a favor."

"A favor? Me?"

Christian nodded. "I'm trying to go through the sleuth, one by one, and get to know everyone as the Alpha. But Bobby trusts you. And I was hoping I could too."

Trust me? To do what? Matthew went back to rubbing his hands on his pants. If he could comfortably put them in his pockets sitting down, he would have, but he couldn't. When Matthew didn't say anything, Christian smiled kindly at him and continued. "I have an item that I plan on purchasing that I don't feel comfortable with the postal system handling. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind picking it up while you're in Chicago and bringing it back for me."

Matthew's mind raced. What exactly was his new Alpha into? Surely it wouldn't be anything illegal; drugs and guns were just a couple of the things that popped into his mind. Matthew shook his head. There was no way Christian would put a member of his sleuth in danger like that, but he couldn't help but ask.

"I won't get into trouble for doing this, will I?"

"No." Christian laughed. "Although if Vinnie finds out, he might have a few words to say to you.

"Vincent?" Why would Christian's mate want to talk to him if he did this?

"The item in question is from Tiffany's," Christian said, raising his brow. Matthew's eyes widened as everything suddenly made sense. Oh wow!

"Yes," he blurted. "Yes, sure, okay, I would be honored. Anything you need."

Christian chuckled, placed a hand on his shoulder, and squeezed.

"Thank you. You can understand why I don't want an item such as this being posted or even couriered to me."

"I can. I'm touched that you trust me to collect it and deliver it into your hands."

"You're of my sleuth. I would trust you with my life."

Matthew's eyes teared up at the absolute sincerity he felt from his Alpha. No one before had ever had so much faith in him.

"Thank you. I won't let you down."

The Autumn Lands by J. Scott Coatsworth

Jerrith Ladner ran down Dyer's Alley in Althos, winded but not daring to stop. He swung left down Chaplain's Lane where the lanterns cast a crazy patchwork of light across cobbles, uneven enough to give even the Night Guard pause. His lungs hurt, but he didn't slow down and didn't dare glance back.

The occasional passerby stared at him as he flashed past, but he ignored them. Several times he stumbled and fell, and blood dripped down his bare leg from a skinned knee. The outskirts of town were silent, with almost everyone already indoors for the night.

His recent past was a blur, with snatches of it flitting by in his head like birds, flapping and confusing him with their unsteady rhythm:

The kiss.

The unexpected shock of it.

The glimpse of the Autumn Lands through the Nevris man's golden eyes.

At last, exhausted, Jerrith ducked behind a low wall that ran along the fields just outside of town and looked back.

It was quiet. There was nothing but blackness crisscrossed by lamplight at even intervals.

Almost sobbing, he sat down with his back to the wall and curled up into himself, scarcely noticing the pain that traced the lines of his rib cage or even the bright line of red on his leg.

Ever so slowly, his heavy breathing eased and his jumbled mind began to sort things out.

He had been walking to the Smithy in the early morning when the Nevris caravan had passed him by, six wagons of merchandise from the Autumn Lands covered with heavy tarps, crossing through town on its way to the stables on the far side of the village. A stranger had drawn his attention—an outrider for the caravan.

Tall and slender where Jerrith was stocky and muscled, he was a young man, more or less Jerrith's own age. His blond hair had been pulled back behind his pointed ears, the mark of the Nevris. He moved with a quiet and restrained grace.

His eyes were wide and golden, and they'd met his as Jerrith crossed the town square on the way to 'prentice to the blacksmith. The man's gaze had filled Jerrith with something hot and impulsive, a sense of anticipation. Something that he had no name for.

Then he'd been gone.

Jerrith had spent the long, dizzying hours of work in the Smithy, hammering out heated metal into a new plowshare for Farmer Angus, the hot breath of the bellows tempered only by the cool springtime air from outside. Trying to forget those eyes.

The heat of the oven only served to fuel the heat he felt inside, until he thought he might explode.

Sent home at last well after nightfall, he'd heard a whispered voice from the dark alleyway between the Alchemist's shop and the Rutting Crow. Jerrith had looked around to see if anyone was watching, then slipped into the alley, his heart beating faster and the bulge in his pants stiffening.

The man had kissed him hard and rough, and he'd returned the kiss passionately as the Nevris man pulled him close.

Beside a Black Tarn by Angel Martinez

"Do you have your route planned?" Shax asked Leopold as he tucked the field glasses into his jacket.

"Up the long drainpipe. On the side without windows. The master suite first."

"That's my boy. Remember, only what's out in the open tonight. No looking for safes, trapdoors, or hidden rooms."

An irritated peep followed his advice, accompanied by what Shax was beginning to recognize as a hedgehog glare. "I have it, Captain. You gave simple instructions. I am not Heckle."

"Now, now. None of that." Shax ran a hand through his hair to complete his artful mussing. "Heckle's not stupid. Just… easily distracted."

"And impetuous. And clumsy and so twitchy. Curious fingers."

"He did apologize and has orders not to enter your burrow again. Please let it go." Shax unfastened the first three buttons of his shirt. "Here we go, then. I'll do the best I can to give you time, but when you hear me leaving or when I call for you, it's time to go."

With a last pat to Shax's leg, Leopold dropped to all fours and scurried off through the vegetation. This would be classic accomplice distraction technique, nothing fancy. Start with the basics. He tapped in the code for the Brimstone's pilot pod where Ness was monitoring. "We're going in, cupcake. Radio silence, please. I'll yell if we need you."

"Please be careful, my love." Ness's soft voice caressed his nerves.

"Easy job. Nothing to worry about."

"You do know you've said that before."

"Hush. No more. I'll see you soon."

He started for the front door, keeping in plain sight, dragging his right foot a bit in case anyone was watching. Tonight, Leopold was the second-story man while Shax was just the diversion.

He waited until Leopold had made it around the side of the house before he lifted the handle on the gargoyle knocker and hammered on the door. "Hello! Is anyone home? Please, please help! There's been a terrible accident!"

A thin, terrified wail seeped through the heavy door. Shax tilted his head to listen. No, this was getting too ridiculous. A clank of chains accompanied heavy footfalls toward the door. Something on the other side let out an eerie moan. Then the door swung open on creaking hinges to reveal a dim, cobweb-festooned chandelier in a much-neglected front hall.

Oh, for all the sulfurous pits' sakes. Shax decided to play along and performed the requisite action by calling "Hello?" at the dark and sinister interior.

He jerked back when a face suddenly popped up before him. Pale, cadaverous, sunken eyes wide, the apparition regarded him openmouthed for a single instant.

"Bells and whiskers!" the apparition whispered in obvious horror. "What in all elements are you doing out there? You're supposed to be in here. Oh my goodness."

A skeletal hand closed around Shax's wrist and he blinked in confusion as he was dragged inside. "Pardon?"

"It's really rather rude of you. If you're going to answer the summons, you should at least do it properly."

"I'm… sorry?"

Eternity in the Tides by Freddy MacKay

Crimson,  hot  pink,  burnt  orange,  and  a  dark  purple  lit  the  sky  and splashed  over  the  calm  waters  of  Lake  Superior.  Dusk  had  fallen  in  all  its beauty,  gracing  Zak  with  the  perfect  moment  at  his  favorite  stomping grounds.  If  he  had  to  go,  and  well…  yeah,  he  couldn't  ask  for  anything better than this.  Tonight  was  the  night. Had to be.

Water  lapped  at  the  boat,  rocking  it  gently.  A  breeze  wafted  over  Zak. He  shivered,  then  hugged  himself  as  he  looked  over  the  lake,  back  at Madeline  Island.  Like  each  night  over  the  past  few  days,  a  pang  of  longing hit  him.  Zak  had  said  his  goodbyes,  accepted  the  fate  handed  to  him,  knew better  than  to  hold  on  to  dreams  he  could  never  have.  He  should  have  been able  to take  the  next  step.

But  he  couldn't.

Each  night  he  rowed  back  to  his  rental  cabin,  Quiet  Bequest,  in  defeat. What  the  hell  he  held  on  for,  Zak  didn't  have  a  clue.  His  heart  thumped heavily,  his  palms  slipped  over  the  oars,  and  the  hair  on  his  arms  stood  up —goose  bumps  everywhere—as  if something big were  about  to happen.

Well,  yeah,  something  huge  if  Zak  could  get  his  head  on  straight.  Well, maybe  not  straight—his  plan  was  utter  ridiculousness  to  the  outside observer. Made  sense  to him, though. But  then it  would.

Anticipation  rode  Zak  hard.  He  knew  what  he  had  to  do.  Planned  it. Came  determined.  This  trip,  the  two-week  cabin  retreat  he  could  never afford,  the  rowboat—my  accident—had  been  in  the  works  for  months.  And now… now  Zak cowered in his  waterlogged rowboat.

About J. Scott Coatsworth

Scott is the admin for the Queer Sci Fi site. He has been writing since ele- mentary school, when he and won a University of Arizona writing contest in 4th grade for his first sci fi story (with illustrations!). He finished his first novel in his mid twenties, but after seeing it rejected by ten publishers, he gave up on writing for a while.

Over the ensuing years, he came back to it periodically, but it never stuck. Then one day, he was complaining to Mark, his husband, about how he had been derailed yet again by the death of a family member, and Mark said to him "the only one stopping you from writing is you."

Since then, Scott has gone back to writing in a big way, finishing more than a dozen short stories—some new, some that he had started years be- fore—and seeing his first sale. He's embarking on a new trilogy, and also runs QSF, a support group for writers of gay sci fi, fantasy, and supernatu- ral fiction.
