Help! Inspiration Needed!

That's the cover I made for the Queer Sci Fi group I'm part of on Facebook. I took 2nd place, YAY, but since I didn't win they won't be using it for the cover of the eBook featuring all the 300 word flash stories inspired by the theme, Discovery.

Now I need to come up with an idea for a new eBook so I can use that cover! What do you think of when you see it?

When Will I Be Loved by Julie L. Hayes

On Sale Now!

Blurb:
Fairy tales can come true…
Miller Fenwick wants the kind of happy ending his best friend got, with the hunky werewolf of his dreams. Trouble is, there doesn’t seem to be a Prince Charming on the horizon, and casual encounters don’t cut it anymore. Now that Alexx and Raoul are engaged, Miller is becoming resigned to being the bridesmaid, never the bride. But a chance encounter with a sexy stranger at Charisma has his hopes soaring, and his heart is wide open to possibilities.

Holt Wynne is the head of Helios, the largest vampire organization in the country. He’s a very influential and wealthy man, with a deep-seated hatred of werewolves. His running into Miller at Charisma isn’t entirely accidental. He’d meant to wait, but his emotions got the better of him, and he couldn’t stay away. And now see what he’s done…

Wait until Miller finds out he’s sort of just gotten married to the sexy vampire who hates the people who are Miller’s best friends. Sparks are gonna fly—and not just in the bedroom. One thing for sure—life in Crescent Bay is never dull!

Excerpt:

Miller forced himself to take a breath, unaware until he did that he’d stopped breathing.

Quit being ridiculous. Wine going to your head already?

But he’d only had the one glass. And he hadn’t even finished that. He wasn’t such a lightweight, when it came to holding his alcohol, and he knew it.

He told himself it was just his imagination. But just to be safe, he began a slow cautious turn, looking around him, without appearing to be searching for anything—or anyone.

And there he was.

Standing a heartbeat away from Miller was one of the sexiest men he’d ever seen in his life. A man every bit as sexy as Raoul Marchand, although not in the same feral way as the werewolf.

This man was light where Raoul was dark. His hair was a honey blonde which stood out by virtue of being obviously natural, in a place where most blondes were either created by the sun or came from a bottle. He stood a little taller than Miller, exuding a presence that went beyond the merely physical, possessed of the bearing and mien of a veritable god.

But it was his eyes that drew Miller in and held him spellbound. Blue and green, like staring into tropical waves, flecked with bits of pure molten gold. And the way he was staring at Miller was sending the most delicious shivers traveling up and down his spine.

The man took a step toward Miller, his hand outstretched. Before Miller quite realized what had happened, he’d placed his own hand inside of the other man’s, and he found himself being drawn onto the dance floor.

Bio:

Julie Lynn Hayes first began publishing short stories and poetry in the 1990’s, when it was a different ballgame altogether, and Ebooks hadn’t been dreamed of yet. That changed in 2010 with the acceptance of her first romance novel. She’s come a long way since that first book appeared, and is finding the journey a very educational one.

She lives in St. Louis with her daughter Sarah and her cat Ramesses. She often writes of two men finding true love and happiness in one another’s arms, and is a great believer in the happily ever after. She likes to write in different genres, to stretch herself in order to see what is possible. Her great challenge is to be told something can’t be done—she feels compelled to do it.

When she isn’t writing, she enjoys crafts, such as crocheting and cross stitch, needlepoint and knitting, and she loves to cook, spending time watching the Food Network. Her favorite chef is Geoffrey Zakarian. Her family thinks she’s a bit off, but she doesn’t mind. Marching to the beat of one’s own drummer is a good thing, after all. Her published works can be found at Dreamspinner Press, eXtasy Books, Wayward Ink Press, and Amber Quill Press.

Excerpt:
Perin McSmith picked up the last item on top of his dresser. Instead of immediately packing it away in his box, Peri stopped and took a good look at it. He couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face. It was a picture of him and his best friend, Devin. Taken when they were younger, it was one of his favorites.
He remembered the day like it was yesterday. It was the night before his high school graduation. They’d gone out to celebrate one last time before school was out, just him and Dev.
That next week Peri would start his brand new job at Spaceport Prime, the largest port on the North American continent servicing flights bound for space travel. Dev had been working as a docking gate technician for the past year and was able to get Peri an interview. Dev put in a good word with the supervisor, and Peri got the job.
It was a time of big changes for Peri. Not only was he leaving school and the orphanage he’d lived in all his life, but he was starting a new career and moving into a new apartment.
All he had to do was find a man and life would be complete.
Of course, things didn’t always work out the way you planned them.
Peri was grateful for his friend. Devin was always there for him. Growing up in the McSmith Group Home for Boys, they’d bonded almost from the start. They were more than just friends; they were brothers. Not that anyone would mistake them as blood related. Peri was thinner, and had wavy black hair and brown eyes. He’d always wished he had Devin’s pretty blond hair.
He placed the picture into the box and sealed it. That was the last of it. Anything not included with the pre-furnished apartment had already been sold. Where Peri was going, he would only need his clothes and personal belongings.
Never in a million years did he think he’d be packing up and moving across the galaxy. Dev was the one who yearned to travel the stars and see what was beyond the solar system. Peri had no such desires. It never occurred to him that he might actually leave the planet.
But seeing how happy Devin was in his new home, he was a little envious. He found himself missing his friend something fierce. Sure they video chatted regularly and Devin sent pictures, but it wasn’t the same.
The planet Dega was so beautiful. It was no wonder Devin wanted to stay.
It was the perfect place to raise a family. That’s what Devin was doing. He was living with Bastian Drago, his bondmate. They had a son, Callan, who was the cutest little thing Peri had ever seen. Half-human and half-Degan, he took the best traits from each of his dads and made a perfect little baby. And now Devin was pregnant again.
Peri really had a hard time wrapping his brain around the whole situation. First Bastian bonded with Devin. Peri didn’t really understand the specifics, but Dev said it was like they were soulmates. What really freaked him out was the pregnancy thing. Something about Bastian’s DNA changed Devin’s body so he could make a baby… a once-in-a-lifetime freak mutation. It was just so wrong. But damn, they sure made a cute baby.
It took Peri some time to get up the courage to make the move, but he did it. He was leaving Earth and moving to Dega.
Okay, so getting fired from his job at the spaceport was a big help in pushing him to make the change. He’d been late one too many times, according to his supervisor. Besides, it was only a matter of time before his job was replaced by the new automated docking operating system.
Whatever.

Wednesday Briefs: Fortitude Part 32

Happy Wednesday! Please enjoy this post based on the prompt: May the circle be unbroken.

Fortitude Part 32

Was the man holding a knife at my throat one of the people helping betas and gammas get away? Or was he part of the king’s circle who were consuming and misusing power? I opened my mouth, and he dug the knife in again; another trickle of blood slid down my neck, the warm slide tickling on its way down to soak my collar.

“You don’t speak,” he said harshly. “One word, and it will be your last.”

He definitely knew what I was.

“You.”

“Me?” Teddy licked his lips. His eyes were huge.

“Who are you working for?”

Teddy shook his head violently back and forth. “No one!”

The man snorted. “Is that why you seen speaking with Varket at the Royal Pavilioin tonight?”

Someone had been following us; watching. I hadn’t even sensed anything out of the ordinary, even though I’d been scanning the crowd for anyone looking too closely at us.

“He spoke to us; we didn’t seek out his company.” Teddy’s fingers clutched the edges of the sling supporting his arm.

“Why are you here again?”

“Look. If you knew Chester and Bart, they must have spoken about us.”

The man’s fingers dug in when Teddy said their names. I winced internally; if this guy was prevaricating, acting as if Varket were the loathsome worm his tone suggested, Teddy had just given away the game.

And it could have deadly consequences.

The knife wavered at my throat, but didn’t move far enough that I would be willing to try and swallow the saliva pooling in my mouth. The man’s fingers were a vise on my shoulder. “Who are you?”

“My name is Teddy. The guy you’re bleeding is my best friend, Will.”

“Prove it.” He just didn’t give up. “Why are you here?”

“We’ve been following clues Schvesla left behind. If I can move, I can prove it.”

“You can move.” Teddy jerked toward the plaque, and the man barked, “Slowly!”

Teddy grimaced; he had to pull his arm out of the sling in order to work the cogs properly. “We came here for this,” Teddy said. The final cog spun and sank into position. The thunk of the trap door opening vibrated the floor.

Now was the moment of truth. Either we’d signed our own death warrants—and those of any beta and gamma who came after us—or we’d been facing a member of the resistance all along.

The knife was withdrawn from around my neck. I spun, glaring at my attacker. “What the hell is with you people and knives?” He had to be part of the resistance.

“Better safe than sorry,” the man said. He swiped the tip of the blade across his rough-spun blouse. The blood was invisible among the other stains; no way had this man followed us to the Pavilion. He had others working with him, but who? “I won’t apologize for making sure I am not dealing with scum who abuse and rape people’s minds and powers for their own gain.”

I drew myself up, ready to be insulted, but Teddy slid his hand across my back, rubbing at the marks that were probably already bruises on the back of my shoulder. The touch ground me; how would I feel if someone hurt Teddy? This man was trying to prevent that.

“Who are you?” I was tired of calling him the man.

“My name isn’t important; I’m just one part of the whole. May the circle be unbroken.” His response had the intonated sound of an oft-repeated scripture.

Great. Zealots.

“We’ve been searching for a way to stop the king from using Schvesla’s machine to use beta and gamma power to influence the citizens of the city.”

No Name snorted. “We’ve been searching for a way to do that since just after the man himself died without revealing the secret of its location.”

Clearly they’d had no luck, but maybe, just maybe, that was because they hadn’t had us. Teddy and I had a huge motivation to keep each other safe, and we knew more than any other pair according to Chester and Bart.

“They told us about how you got them out, but not until their power had been used up.”

Resignation with a tinge of shame pulled the sneer from No Name’s face. “We had no choice; the only way to get them out was to fake their deaths. No one would believe it if they were to die before they’d been used up. We’ve been searching for Schvesla’s machine for a hundred years, but it disappeared.”

I wanted to shout that a way should’ve been found, that they’d stood aside and knowingly allowed men to be ruined, but Teddy once again stroked my back and pulled me back from a disastrous outburst. I couldn’t judge No Name and whoever helped him; before we’d met Anna, I’d ignored all the signs that things weren’t right in the city. I should’ve known better; I should’ve done something.

But I hadn’t, and that was my burden to bear.

“We found a passageway, hidden beneath the city, that ends in a cell with a skeletal corpse. Schvesla hid clues behind cogs that have to be turned in certain orders. I think, maybe, that the reason this theater was so important to him, was that it allowed him to access his pinnacle achievement.”

“You think the passage goes to the machine?”

“There’s only one way to find out.”

Once again, getting into the tunnel was extremely difficult. No Name helped me lower Teddy down with the rope we’d brought. I left it tied off around a support column so we could climb out when we were done.

No Name allowed me to take the lead, but he hovered close behind me as we walked. I wanted to shove him aside and pull Teddy close to me, but I forced myself to focus.

I strained my senses when we reached the end of the tunnel, but all seemed silent and still on the other side of the stone flooring.

eBook Spotlight: Henry Gallant and the Warrior by H. Peter Alesso

HENRY GALLANT AND THE WARRIOR

by H. Peter Alesso

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
In the 22th Century, the people of the Solar System have banded together against an alien invasion. Unfortunately, they’re losing—badly.
As the only Natural remaining in the genetically engineered officer corps of the United Planet’s fleet, Henry Gallant has unique mental abilities that have proven essential to the defense against the Titan invaders. Nevertheless his fellow officers lack faith in him, and worse, he has angered prominent men by speaking truth to power.
Despite this, Admiral Collingsworth has given him command of the Warrior, the most advanced stealth warship in the UP arsenal, and ordered him to the alien’s main base to spy, intrigue, and disrupt their war capacity.
Gallant’s mission leads to risky battles and painful choices, but no choice is more personal, or intimate, than the choice to face one’s own death. And for Henry Gallant—a flawed young man in a hopeless situation against overwhelming odds—a dreadful decision looms before him.
He has only one saving grace—he is unafraid.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Lieutenant Henry Gallant walked along the cobblestone streets of New Annapolis—head down, mind racing . . .

My orders say take command of the Warrior immediately . . . but no promotion . . . Why not?

He pondered the possibilities, but he already knew the answer. Though he had steely gray eyes, a square jaw, and was taller than nearly everyone around him, what distinguished him most was not visible to the naked eye—he was a Natural—born without genetic engineering.

By the time he reached the space elevator, the welcoming breeze of the clear brisk morning had brightened his mood and he fell into line behind the shipyard personnel without complaint.

Looking up, he marveled; that cable goes into the clouds like an Indian rope trick.

When at last it was his turn, the guard scanned his comm pin against the access manifest.

The portal light blinked red.

“Pardon, sir. Access denied,” said the grim faced sentry.

“Call the officer of the guard,” demanded Gallant.

The officer of the guard appeared, but was no more inclined to pass Gallant through. He touched the interface panel and made several more entries, but the portal continued to blink red.

“There’s a hold on your access, sir.”

Gallant asked, “A hold?”

“Yes, sir. Your clearance and authorization are in order, but SIA has placed a hold on your travel movements. They want you to report to SIA headquarters, ASAP.”

“I need to go to the shipyard and attend to important business before going to the Solar Intelligence Agency,” clarified Gallant, but even as he said it, he knew it wouldn’t help.

“Sorry, sir. Orders.”
