Wednesday Briefs: Fortitude Part 30

Yep, back again!! This week's flash update was inspired by the prompt pic below.

Fortitude Part 20

Gut-churning rage consumed me as I watched several nobles watching Teddy and me with avarice naked on their faces. Pure greed motivated them, and now that I wasn’t blinded by my need to be one of them, I could see it. It was glaringly obvious, from the tips of their carefully curled hair to the toes of their pointy, useless shoes encrusted with jewels.

Every painted face was a mask I’d never penetrated before, but was now paper thin.

And what they wanted us for… I would never let that happen.

“Did you see these, Will?” Teddy gestured with his chin toward his plate. “I never saw shrimp in person before.”  The city was essentially landlocked, and there was very little free flowing water in the area—and of course it was reserved in parks and private grounds the unprivileged masses rarely were allowed to tread. But someone had cultivated the rare delicacy.

We really were being given the white glove treatment. I clenched my hands in my dove grey gloves and then forced myself to relax and extend my fingers; we couldn’t afford any screw ups. “Well, enjoy them.”

My stomach was far too upset for exotic fare, so I stuck to a few dainty rolls spread with a soft, delicate cheese. It was good, but I would’ve enjoyed it more in less contentious locales. The nobles parried and thrust with every comment. Each bow and flick of a fan meant something.

I was hopelessly out of my depth.

“Are you enjoying the repast, William?” I turned to face the speaker, the fresh cup of wine cupped in my hand would fortify my nerves—hopefully.  We’d been carefully courted, a few nods and how-do-you-dos, but nothing overt; after all, we weren’t supposed to know we were coveted for what our powers could provide: more control.

My plate and goblet didn’t even wobble. “Yes, thank you….”

“Sir Varket.”

“Pleased to meet you.” He knew my name, but I didn’t know who he was. Someone on the gentry circuit then, but not one of the nobles who lived about the king’s home, most likely. Still, it was best to seem naïve and awestruck by any title—as I would’ve been just a few weeks prior. I bowed, deeper than necessary, and bit my tongue when I saw his not-so-hidden smirk.

Teddy stepped into the gap before the silence could become awkward, bowing as well. He tucked his hand in his jacket like I’d suggested as soon as he finished eating, so his bow was a trifle lopsided, but that didn’t really matter. “The food is quite delicious, but I can’t wait to get back to the concert. The earlier arrangement was lovely.”

“And you are?” Sir Varket asked.

“This is my friend, Theodore. He is staying with me during my brother’s fete, though we hardly thought we’d get to attend such a concert. The music is nice; that is partly the acoustics in the Royal Pavilion,” I said. “They allow for a swell of music that is far better suited for the many instruments of the orchestra than the smaller halls, but I still heard a slight echo.” I was known as a bit of a sanctimonious jerk, so my critical assessment of the evening’s entertainment would be in character.

“Still, the music has been played quite skillfully.” I inclined my head toward Sir Varket, as if acceding him the point. “I believe the call to resume our seats is about to end the social part of this evening’s event. I’m glad I had a chance to introduce myself; I’ve become friends with your brother, Michael, and he has spoken of your abilities as a Beta. I was quite impressed with the things I’d heard.”

I waved my hand casually through the air, brushing aside his compliment, as if I were feeling modest. “In the days when there were a lot of Betas, I’m sure my power would’ve been quite commonplace. I’ve been thinking on studying why there haven’t been any others in so many years.”

“Oh!” He licked his lips. “Well, I think that is a very valid concern.” Varket recovered quickly, but his shocked exclamation let me know I’d struck a bulls-eye before he could smooth his tone. “How do you think you’d go about it?”

“I’m not really sure; there’s not much information to go on.” Time to soothe the worry I’d created. “I haven’t really given it that much thought, but with my coming of age so close, deciding the path my life should take has had me pondering Betas of the past.”

“Of course, of course. Oh, the valets are ushering everyone back. It was nice to meet you, young William. And you too, of course, Theodore.”

Teddy and I made sure we filtered in to the concert hall several steps behind my family. “Do you think he’s the one who got the tickets?”

“Perhaps. Or he was an envoy of someone more powerful.” That was far more likely. Whoever was sucking up the power of Beta and Gamma pairs wasn’t new to the crime. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit of the monarchy was behind everything.

This evening was nothing more than a waste of our time. The second half of the concert featured very soft pieces, light and airy. I couldn’t stop fidgeting in my seat. The tunnel ending in a cell with the corpse wouldn’t leave my mind, and the contrast to the music grated on my nerves.

“Sit still, Will. At least your friend has decent manners; try to follow his example,” my mother hissed.

I went rigid in my seat and made a conscious effort not to react. “I apologize, Mother.”

Seemingly satisfied, she leaned away from me. I glanced at Teddy out of the corner of my eye, then oh so slowly tapped his foot with mine.

Nothing.

He must have fallen into another fugue.

4 Stars eBook Review: Family Jewels by M.J. O'Shea

This week I am featuring M.J.'s latest eBook, Family Jewels. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. And don't miss out on reading the story excerpt and entering her Rafflecopter giveway!

4 Stars for Family Jewels

Family jewels features... jewels! We meet a fine arts thief with a penchant for jewels in particular and an Interpol agent whose job it is to catch him... and they meet up and fall for each other completely by accident. But how long can that really last?

I won't go more into the plot because once the groundwork is set, the story makes some twists and turns I'd hate to spoil. There were a few details that cropped up, like a search history that didn't get deleted immediately, that I was waiting for a later AHA moment to come into play that didn't, but overall, once the action started I was following along avidly.

Corbin's character felt believable, though I'm still of two minds about him as a "bad guy". He could be if he's a gentleman thief because of the way he goes about scoring his target or if he's somehow worse because he's not desperate to steal to do anything other than scratch that itch. His "good guy" counterpart, Luke, began the story as a tired agent frustrated by the cropping up of a cold case that is going nowhere. He gradually loses that middle-aged feel as his relationship deepens with Corbin, and their romance flourishes.

The plot was harder for me to get into, as my attention wandered a lot. The first half the book was really slow, and the exciting moments--Corbin's thefts--were almost anticlimactic. Now, I have a feeling that was done per the characterization, but it made the story not as interesting. If not for the fact I was reading this to review, I probably would've stopped before I hit the part that intrigued me mentally and left the story to some day where my DNF pile gets a revisit.

That being said, I definitely enjoyed the 2nd half of the book, all the way up to the end. While Family Jewels is summed up nicely in a cohesive beginning, middle, end, I felt the romance didn't get the realization it deserved though I won't say more because my quibble is minor and I'd hate to spoil the moment for readers. I truly, truly hope that means M.J. will be writing a sequel, as I think there were several hints seeded into the closing chapters that would lead to explanations for how book one ends and give us a chance to revisit these guys!

About the Book

Cover Artist: L.C. Chase

Release Date: 27th April, 2015

Blurb: Corbin Ford, aka the Nightwatchman, named for the antique pocket watches he leaves behind at jobs, has been in the cat-burgling business for years. His father was. His grandfather was. His mother is still one of the most renowned thieves. Corbin likes his high-profile heists, priceless paintings from private collections, artifacts from museums, but his favorite? Jewels. Sparkly, beautiful jewels. If they’re famous, better yet.

Interpol agent Luke Eldridge has one goal and one goal only: to catch the Nightwatchman. Luke’s been after him for months, but getting the slip time and again is getting embarrassing. Luke has never even laid eyes on the bastard, but he’d happily strangle him. And then arrest him.

When Luke meets Corbin, the man of his dreams, he falls hard and fast… only to catch Corbin red-handed with his hand in a jewelry case at the scene of the highest-profile murder that’s rocked the international world in years.

Excerpt

“We’ve got something you need to see, Luke. You’d better get over here now.”

Luke Eldridge sighed into his phone. He glanced at the slices of pizza he’d just picked up from a food cart down on the Camden Lock. Looked like there was more cold pizza in his future. Typical. Irritating, but typical.

“Where are you?” Luke asked. He dragged himself off his soft leather couch. It made a disgusting squelching sound. Luke turned and halfheartedly wiped the seat off. He was tired from the run he’d forced himself to take, wet, and starting to chill as heat escaped through his damp T-shirt. The last thing he wanted to do was get back into a suit and go out in the cold he’d just escaped from.

Rob, one of his oldest friends from his days in the FBI academy, rattled off a very upper crust Kensington address.
“Jesus. Is this one going to make the morning press?” Luke asked. People who lived at addresses like that tended to make the news. His job was always harder when he had a ton of panicking socialites breathing down his neck guarding their beloved possessions. He didn’t need them or the news vans outside his crime scene.
“Probably. I’ll try to put it off as long as I can, but you know how it works. Just get your ass over here. Waterman’s on my dick already.”
“Sounds unpleasant.” Luke chuckled under his breath. “Does that surprise you?”
“Not really.”
Didn’t surprise Luke either. Their division chief within Interpol Art Crimes was all about the high profile cases. Art, jewelry, anyone with a Lord or Lady attached to their name. Even the odd Sir here and there. Cases like that were good press for the agency, he always said. Probably more like good for getting his face on the camera. Waterman was a media whore extraordinaire. Usually Luke didn’t care, but when they were in the middle of trying to open a case, it kind of pissed him off.
Luke felt it would be better to deal with the press after they had some solid leads, or, you know, someone in custody, but far be it for him to correct Waterman. He’d spent the last eight years trying to overcome the hereditary American-ness Waterman deemed a deep character flaw. If he started correcting the guy now, he might as well sign his own pink slip.
“I can be there in fifteen minutes. Waterman won’t even be done fixing his hair for the cameras,” Luke told Rob. He was already in his suit pants and shaking out his dress shirt. It felt a little stale from a long day, but he wasn’t going to put on a new one for a late evening call. If all went well, Luke would be back in his sweats and on his couch in less than an hour.
“Try to make it ten. I’m not in the mood to get my skin pulled off a strip at a time.”
He sounded like his typical sarcastic self, but the tone of his friend’s voice was different. Worried, maybe. “What’s going on, Rob? What are you leaving out?”
“There’s something weird about this one. Might cause us a lot of shit in the near future if I’m right.”
“Are you going to tell me or play guessing games?” Luke wasn’t in the mood to play anything. All he wanted to do was eat some still-warm pizza, crawl into bed, and sleep for days—or at least until his alarm went off at six. He’d gotten way too little sleep lately. He hadn’t gotten enough sleep in years.
Rob cleared his throat nervously. “You need to see this for yourself. Just get here, man."
Luke disconnected the call. He finished dressing, shoved one piece of his pizza on a paper towel, and grabbed his keys. He could eat it on the way without ruining his suit. Even if he spilled, fuck it. Luke wasn’t going to sacrifice one more decent dinner to the cause.
It had rained earlier, and the London streets were still slick and dark, half frozen in the early spring chill, but at least it was quiet. The air was close to freezing, too. Unseasonably low temps, but sadly not by much. After all the years he’d been in London, the winters still got to him, cold and wet, the kind that seemed to creep all the way into the center of his chest—nothing like his childhood home in South Carolina or even Virginia, where he’d lived and worked his first few years out of the academy. Sometimes Luke missed the old optimistic years at Quantico. These days it seemed like the cold was impossible to shake. It seeped into his bones and camped out until nothing he did could warm him through.
I’m getting old.
The stone row houses slipped past, nestled together, dark on the outside like everything else, interiors shining and cheery against the insidious, creeping chill. Everyone who knew better was inside somewhere, enjoying dinner, relaxing with the people they loved. They didn’t look alone. He’d figured long ago his hopes for being one of them had probably passed. Luke loved his job, it was his life, but some nights he wouldn’t mind a break. Luke bypassed their unit’s Westminster offices in favor of going straight to the scene. He didn’t need anything but what he had on him. Hopefully he’d be in and out in time for the late news.

  About the Author

I'm Mj O’Shea:) I grew up, and still live, in sunny Washington state and while I love to visit other places, I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home.
I spent my childhood writing stories. Sometime in my early teens, the stories turned to romance. Most of those were about me, my friends, and our favorite movie and pop stars. Hopefully, I’ve come a long way since then.

When I’m not writing, I love to play the piano, dance, cook, paint pictures, and of course read! I like sparkly girly girl things, own at least twenty different colored headbands, and I have two little dogs who sit with me when I write. Sometimes they comes up with ideas for me too…when they’re not busy napping.

Wednesday Briefs: Fortitude Part 29

Back again! (and not late on this one at least, right?) This week's flash with the Wednesday Briefers was inspired by the prompt: Get off of me before I puke!

Fortitude Part 29

“Damn it. Lower me down.” I looped the rope around my waist quickly and held tight. “Teddy?” I hurried over to him, and accidentally kicked the lamp. It was barely glowing. I reached down and sent a surge of energy into it, gasping at the painful drawing I hadn’t felt in a long time.

“Will?” Teddy blinked up at me.

Relief compounded my exhaustion, and I swayed. “You really must stop falling asleep on me. My heart can’t take it!”

“Sorry.”

“Come on, let’s go. I have some help to get us out of here.” It was a good thing I’d been accosted by two such strong guys, because it was almost more than I could handle to get Teddy up and over to the rope. I carefully adjusted it around him, tying a good knot. “Here, tuck your arm in against your chest and hold on with the other one.”

Once he was in position I called up to the waiting men, still held in thrall, “Pull him up, carefully, and then sit him down somewhere safe.

I steadied Teddy as he swung in the air until he was too high for me to reach, then watched anxiously until he was safely over the lip. I heard scuffling sounds. “Are you okay?”

“Fine,” Teddy called. His voice was strained. “I’m sitting on the edge of the stage.”

“Come back and lower the rope for me,” I ordered. I didn’t tie the rope around my waist, just held on again. I spun and jerked as they heaved the rope up. It was making me dizzy, so I reached for the lip of the hole. “Help me.” Altair and the skinny man reached for me, and I scrambled out of the hole. A wave of dizziness washed over me, and I lost my balance, tumbling to the floor.

The skinny man landed in a heap on top of me, knocking the wind out of my lungs, which only helped until I dragged in a painful breath. “Get off of me before I puke!” His rancid hair was actually touching my face; what did he put in it, pig fat?

“Are you okay, Will?”

“Fine, fine.” I grunted and coughed as Altair picked up his partner in crime. Both of them stared at me with their eerie blank stares. “Go put the ropes back.” I went over to the plaque on the wall, hoping it would close up the hole in the floor. The last thing we needed was to leave any evidence of our presence behind. Thankfully, it did.

I climbed off the stage and helped Teddy to his feet. “We really have to go.” I wanted nothing more than to order the two bastards waiting for my next command to go turn themselves in, but it would be obvious something wasn’t right with them. We couldn’t afford any scrutiny.

“You two go back to whatever hovel you call home, but don’t be seen.” They lived in the shadows, accosting innocents from the darkness; I was sure staying hidden wouldn’t be hard for them. “Do not leave for the rest of the night. You will wake up, hungover, and not remember anything about tonight.”

They left first, and I faced the difficult prospect of getting Teddy back in time to be dressed properly for the concert. We stumbled together through the gloom for a few streets, but then I was forced to hail a carriage, handing over a few extra coins to the conductor for a swift ride with no stops back to my parent’s home. We snuck in the side entrance and up to my room, meeting no one, though I could feel eyes on us. Servants noticed everything.

Teddy’s jacket was torn and his shirt was filthy. His shoulder and back were bruised. “You can wear an extra sash.” I hurried him through a quick toilet, helping him wash up and fixing his hair with pomade. “Okay, so if you leave your jacket buttoned, you can rest your hand in the fold I made on that extra sash to support your arm. I’ll stay by your side the whole time, okay?”

His lips were already thin with pain, but Teddy nodded. “Here, you need this.” I handed him a cup of water with a few drops of poppy oil. “It’ll help.” He grimaced but drank it as I swiftly dressed in a suit my mother thought would be suitable. My wardrobe wasn’t extensive, but it was full of pieces I thought would help me look the part.

Now I wanted to burn them all, especially what she picked out and put on simple trousers and a tunic. We could leave the unscrupulous city behind, find another place. But the nobles and my parents notwithstanding, there were a lot of good people here, and they were being harmed. I’d always wanted to be lauded a hero… though this wasn’t the way I’d planned it, at all.

Walking down the stairs, I linked my arm with Teddy’s. My family would view it as a mark of solidarity or friendship; I just didn’t want him to tumble down the steps.

“Sorry we’re late,” I said when Mother glared at us over her fan as she stood beside Father. She was showing far too much skin in a style suited for younger ladies, not aging matrons. “You look lovely, Mother.” I gave her the compliment she so clearly expected, and it mollified her somewhat, tempering her frown into a neutral expression.

I could still see the wrinkles on her forehead.

“The carriage has been waiting. Let’s go.” Michael and his wife—dressed more modestly, at least—preceded us down the stairs as our parents led the way. Silence reigned as the carriage chugged across the city to the Royal Pavilion.

“You boys mind your manners tonight. This is an honor,” Father said when we queued to disembark. Maybe he could sense my growing hostility that we were on display.

An honor.

Yeah, right.

Wednesday Briefs: Fortitude Part 28

Back again! Is Teddy okay? Will they be able to find a way out? This week's installment was inspired by the phrase: "I have more brains in my little finger than you do in your whole..." Enjoy!!

Fortitude Part 27

“Teddy?”

There was no answer, and the room beyond the tunnel was dark. My heart raced and my stomach churned as fear gripped me. “Teddy!” I darted into the room, holding my lamp high.

“Oh god.” He was still sitting against the wall. His head lolled to one side. I slammed into the floor next to him, reaching out with trembling fingers. He couldn’t be….

He just had a dislocated shoulder!

I could barely breathe. “T-Teddy?” I stroked his cheek, dreading the feeling of cold flesh, but he was warm and the soft puff of a breath warmed my hand. “Oh, god. Thank you.” I wanted to pull Teddy to my chest and hold him tight and never let go, but I didn’t.

He was hurt, and we had to get home. Teddy shifted and groaned. He blinked slowly, looking up at me. “The light went out”—he yawned—“and I got tired.” He was talking just fine, not slurring his words, and his gaze was steady.

The overwhelming fear when he didn’t answer me left me shaken, but there wasn’t time to indulge my weakness. “I didn’t think I’d be gone that long.”

“What did you find?”

“A jail cell and a dried up skeleton. I didn’t leave the tunnel, though. We have to get back or my parents will raise a fuss.”

Teddy looked up at the rectangular hole in the ceiling and the planks of the wooden ladder scattered about the floor. “How are we going to do that? I don’t even see how you’re getting out, and there’s no way I’m going to be able to climb anything.”

“I know you’re hurt, but I’m hoping you can give me a knee up so I can pull myself out of the hole. Then I’ll go find someone to help get you out. Preferably someone with rope, or maybe just two someones.”

Teddy gaped at me. “But what if they—”

“Don’t worry; I’ll compel them. They’ll never remember coming here, much less our faces.” Just saying the words left a foul taste in my mouth. I hated compelling anyone, and the thought of doing it to someone who was minding their own business was worse. I’d forced Teddy’s father to remember things he’d never agreed to, or my brother to button his lips, but I’d never tried compelling a stranger.

I’d never wanted to, but we couldn’t afford for my parents to begin to ask questions. Not with our safety and freedom on the line.

“I don’t like it.”

Of course he didn’t. Teddy was honest to a fault.

“Necessity often requires us to do something that isn’t always palatable.” Bitter, bitter words, but it was the truth, and we both knew it.

“Okay.” Teddy was resigned. He knew what was on the line, just as much as I did.

“Let me help you up.” I put my jacket back on. It smelled like him, and was nicely warm. Teddy winced a few times, but I helped him to his feet and walked over to the broken ladder.

“What do you want me to do?”

“If you hold on to this pole, do you think you can kneel down on one knee? I’ll step up on your bent leg, grab the pole up there, and then the lip of the hole.”

Teddy squinted in the gloom. “Do you think you can make it?”

“Of course.” I wasn’t sure, but our only other option was that cell, and I didn’t want to go in there unprepared. I had a feeling what we’d find there was what Schvesla wanted me to find, and it was not something we should come face to face with unprepared.

Getting out was more of a struggle than I wanted Teddy to realize, so I kept my grunting to a minimum as I levered my body up and out. The late afternoon light was casting growing shadows that I’d usually avoid, but I was looking for those who’d be lurking about.

I’d only gone over three streets, cutting through fetid alleys, when a hand reached out of a recessed doorway, snagging my coat.

“Well here’s a fine young man,” said the man who stepped out, “ripe for the plucking.”

His stringy hair and coarse shirt were filthy, but he wasn’t very big. I needed someone strong. Ahh… my accoster’s muscle filled the doorway. Just what I needed. “I’m not the one who is going to get plucked.”

“Did you hear that, Altair?” the man sniggered. “This stripling thinks he can best you.”

Altair cracked his knuckles with several sharp pops and grinned, exposing several missing teeth.

“Not smart. Now hand over your wallet and those fine boots, too.” The man’s jagged fingernails dug into my arm, and I hoped he hadn’t recently scratched anything… unsavory.

“I have more brains in my little finger than you do in your whole body.” Time to end this; Teddy was waiting. “Do your worst!” I needed them both touching me if I hoped to wipe their memories as well as compel them.

The menacing hulk stepped forward, going for my neck. I got my hand up just in time, and as soon as I had skin-to-skin, I released the power I’d been building since the first second of the confrontation. It flowed into them, freezing both in their tracks.

“Let me go.”

They both dropped their hands to their sides, staring at me with wide, blank eyes.

“Follow me.”

We stuck to the dark alleys on the way back to the theater, but now the reek of the refuse was compounded by the unwashed stench of my company, and their odor only grew as we went inside. I had to make this fast.

“Grab those theater ropes from the curtains,” I ordered. I hurried over to the hole in the ground. “Teddy? I’m back, and I have help. We’ll have you out in a few moments.” My thralls were waiting with the rope. “You two get over here.”

Featured eBook: Two Man Advantage by V.L. Locey

Today I'm featuring V.L. Locey's newest eBook, Two Man Advantage, as part of her blog tour! I might not seem like it, but I do so love reading about jock stories. I married one, after all! lol Okay, so check out the blurb and great excerpt, plus learn about V.L.'s top 3 fav sports movies. Oh, and don't miss out on the Facebook chat, either!

Blurb: Victor Kalinski, all-star forward for the Boston Barracudas, is one of the biggest jerks in professional hockey. Before long his aggressive attitude gets him shipped off to play in the minor leagues.
Furious, he takes to the ice with equal amounts of skill and scathing sarcasm, which doesn’t win him any friends—except for good-natured alternate captain Daniel Arou. He won’t take any of Vic’s crap, and he won’t take no for an answer.
But Vic’s troublemaking is pulling his career one way while Dan’s talent is pushing his in the other. However much they scorch the sheets, they might soon be separated by more than Vic’s fear of being hurt.
Inside Scoop:  This book contains scorching gay sex and a heaping helping of no-holds-barred snark between hot hockey heroes who don’t pull their punches.

A Romantica® gay erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

My Top 3 Favorite Sports Movies

As a fan of sports, and hockey in particular, I enjoy nothing more than sitting down to watch a great sports film. Well, I enjoy a few other things more. *wink-nudge* Here are my three favorite sports films. What are yours? Tell me in the comments below!

Skate hard and love deeply,

V.L. Locey

1-Brian`s Song
No matter how often I see this classic I cry. Every. Single. Time.

2-Slap Shot
This is the funniest hockey movie ever in my opinion. And the strip tease at the end by Micheal Ontkean just makes a great film that much better!

3-The Longest Yard
The Burt Reynolds film, not the Adam Sandler remake. I recall seeing this when I was younger and I think it was what started me crushing on Burt Reynolds.

Excerpt

R (Explicit Language, Gay Sexual Sitautions):

I was soaping up my head when I heard the bathroom door squeak. I froze, hands on my head, shampoo foam sneaking down my temples.

“Hey, Kalinski? I’m sorry if I touched a sore spot, okay?”

There I stood, like a carving of the Roman shampoo god Dandrufficus, silent and stony. I was aching for something but didn’t know what.

No. That’s a miserable-ass lie. I ached to see Arou pull back the thin shower curtain, step over the side of the tub and kiss me into forgetting my tenth birthday…and my eleventh…and my fourteenth as well. I cleared my throat.

“Yeah, whatever,” I said loudly enough to be heard over the rushing water. The plastic curtain rustled when he closed the door. My fingers slipped from my head to hang by my thighs. Eyes closed, I stepped forward. The stream beat down on my head, filling my ears with water and bubbles. I could still hear Dan just on the other side of the shower curtain. My shoulder muscles tensed.

“I tend to let my mouth run away with me sometimes, you know?”

“Yeah, I know how that goes."

Taking a step back, I glanced at the dark form outside the curtain. He must be lounging on the small sink. There wasn’t room for two men in here, especially me and Daniel Arou. I turned to let the water beat the tension from my upper back.

“I didn’t mean any harm,” Dan said. I placed my hands on the tiles, not even seeing the mildew on the grout. Why the fuck was this man apologizing? “I’m sorry if your childhood was rough.”

Yep, that was the clincher. I threw the curtain to the right so hard the old, brittle plastic tore off several of the rusty metallic shower rings. Dan lifted his head quickly from his study of his feet.

“You don’t know shit about me or my childhood. For your information, asscrack, what I said was a joke!” I snarled, pointing a finger at him.

He stared at me. Water was dripping from my finger to the floor. His eyes betrayed him. I saw the long, hungry look. My accusatory digit fluttered downward. My cock began to rise to take my pointy-finger’s place. Dan grew slightly pale, mumbled something, then tripped over his large feet out the bathroom door.

I exited the shower. Just stepped out. Left the water running, wetting the floor, and followed the stupid shit. Dan was facing the front door, his back as stiff as my prick.

“I was not checking you out,” he said through clenched teeth.

I stood about a foot behind him, my dick at attention.

“Yeah, you were,” I said. A horn blew outside in the parking lot. A round of male guffaws followed. My wet skin was starting to get chilly. The heater in the room was locked at fifty-five. “I told you I’m not gay.”

“Neither am I,” he said rapidly. Too rapidly.

Yeah, I knew how this was going to go. I had been hiding my bisexuality since I was old enough to like looking at other guys’ packages in the high school locker room. While things were changing for LGBT players, a ton of us were still pretending.

“That’s too bad,” I said, taking a step closer to him. The floor creaked. He sucked in a short breath. His gasp made me smile. “Seems a gay dude and a bi guy in the same room could be honest with each other at the very least.”

That announcement brought the sexy little shit around in a hurry. One dark eyebrow was climbing up his forehead. Those startlingly blue eyes dropped downward. He licked his bottom lip. My cock began to weep.

“You’re bi?”

“Yeah, and right now I would like nothing better than to jack you up against that dresser and kiss you into a state of delirium.”

Dan wet his lips again. Either he was trying to turn me on, which was a wasted effort given how hard my dick was for the man, or it was a nervous tic. Whatever, it was making me crazy. I rolled my hands into fists to keep them from reaching for him.

“Look, stubby, I need a reply here,” I groaned a minute later. Maybe I had misread his signals. Fuck knows I do it often enough with chicks. Guys are usually less confusing, but not always. “If you’re not up for getting laid, speak up now and I’ll go back into the shower, take care of this boner, then pretend this little conversation never took place.”

Another horn blew in the parking lot. Raucous laughter erupted outside our window. The Cougars were bored. Dan reached behind his back to lock the door. Well. Fuck. Me. I suddenly felt lightheaded.

Author Bio:
V.L. Locey loves worn jeans, belly laughs, reading and writing lusty tales, Greek mythology, the New York Rangers, comic books, and coffee. (Not necessarily in that order.) She shares her life with her husband, her daughter, one dog, two cats, a flock of assorted goofy domestic fowl, and  two steers.

When not writing spicy romances, she enjoys spending her day with her menagerie in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania with a cup of fresh java in hand. She can also be found online on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and GoodReads.
