Barron had spent the second half of the week lying on his stomach to avoid the pain of a burn he got through his T-shirt.

It took forever for him to find a comfortable position on his back that didn’t irritate the sensitive skin still healing from his exposure. Barron had never had such a bad burn before, and he hoped to never have one again.

William shook his head. “I couldn’t keep it on and get up in the treehouse. I had to check.”

He’d ask why, but he already knew the answer. Barron closed his eyes. Anyone not in a thick concrete basement or building, far from windows, had died. Most within hours. They were the lucky ones. The ones who weren’t lucky raved wildly, screaming in pain, before they collapsed.

Most of the folks dying like that were already gone. Finding the decomposing bodies, bloated and reeking in the late spring heat, wasn’t any better.

But what else were they going to do? No one wanted to assume and miss a survivor. They had to check anywhere a person might have been.

They’d cleared the cars first. Coach found Barron’s mom...

Wednesday Brief: Lost Inside Chapter 24

So today's flash was inspired by a cute picture I couldn't resist. Now, just so folks know, I was inundated with a few projects, and my blog was shunted to a back burner for a bit. But never fear, I'm coming back. I'll be posting more varied content, as well as getting back to commenters. So, if you felt I was ignoring you, I promise I wasn't, and I do dearly appreciate every comment sent my way by readers/fans.

Lost Inside Chapter 24

He could’ve been a kitten. Splayed on his back, naked, his stripes glowing faintly in the neon light from the bar sign, Yuri reached up and batted at Benny’s hand. “Keep rubbing.”

Benny stared down at his mate. “You have a brother?” There’d been no brother when their Clans had merged.

“Uh huh.” Yuri frowned. “Keep rubbing.”

Belatedly, Benny started tracing his fingers across Yuri’s forehead, lightly scratching his scalp, and then beginning again. Maybe Yuri’s headache had to do with this new memory coming forward. “Where’s your brother?”

“I dunno.” Yuri shrugged one shoulder.

“You don’t know, or you don’t remember?”

Yuri huffed. “If I don’t remember, I could know and not know I know.”

“What?”

“But, no, I don’t know. That day, my father was so mad. Yuisi was supposed to mate and produce cubs. But he left.”

“He’s older than you?”

“Yeah, but just like, a year. People always used to think we were twins.”

Benny leaned down and pressed a kiss to Yuri’s forehead. “You’re remembering a lot.”

“Sometimes. It’s all blurry, though, like the one time when the TV was broken and all we could see were wavy lines that came and went.” Yuri snarled. “I hate it. Why can’t I be normal?”

“Normal’s overrated. You are what you are. The venom is helping you, but nothing is perfect.” Benny urged Yuri up. “Let’s go back to bed.” They were both tired, and Yuri’s little revelation needed time to settle.

He’d had a brother.

Just how did that fit in with everything else?

***

“How’s the head?” Benny couldn’t sleep so he got up after Yuri drifted off. He turned the TV on low and made some coffee.

“Better.” Yuri slumped on the couch next to him around sunrise. “Can I have some milk?”

“Sure.” Benny got up and poured Yuri a cup of milk. “You didn’t have to get up yet.”

“You wanna talk, right?” Yuri shrugged. “I couldn’t sleep anyway.”

“Things are really changing for you, aren’t they?”

Yuri set his cup down and pulled his legs up. It was almost comical, seeing him curl up his long legs, if it didn’t make Benny sad.

“I remember my brother, kinda. But he left years ago, and it’s all kinda fuzzy.”

“Do you know why he’d be attacking you?” That was the question Benny had been wrestling with since the wee hours of the morning. He’d nearly killed his mate’s brother, and he’d feel bad, but he wouldn’t hesitate to actually do it if the Tiger attacked again.

But how could Yuri forgive him for that? He was damned either way.

“What? No! You didn’t think Yuisi was the one who attacked us, did you?” Yuri sat up, staring at Benny with a frown.

He had. “You mean that Tiger isn’t your brother?” Who the hell was it? Damn it, they’d be back to square one trying to figure out who the hell was after his mate.

“No!” Yuri shook his head. “He’s Yuisi’s mate.”

***

“Hey, guys,” Ellis said. He walked into Benny’s apartment followed by Dav.

“Hi, Ellis!” Yuri’s headache seemed to be completely gone. He pounced on Ellis, giving him a hug. “I smell muffins.”

Dav smiled and produced a bag from behind his back. “Yep. Ellis said these were your favorites.”

“Thank you, thank you!” Yuri opened the bag and took a big whiff. “Banana!”

“Are you going to share?” Benny smiled when his mate pouted.

“There’s only two,” he whined.

Dav pulled his other hand from behind his back. “I’m surprised you couldn’t smell these.”

“Not smell bacon?” Benny huffed. “I just wanted to see how much my mate cared.”

Yuri hurried over to him. “I care. I do! I’ll share, if you want some.” He held out the bag.

Benny felt like a total ass. “Hey, I was just joking,” he said softly. “I don’t like banana muffins, so Dav got me some bacon biscuits. I forgot you probably wouldn’t remember. I used to… .” He used to joke about stealing some of Yuri’s muffins, but his mate must not remember that.

He ran a hand over his head. “I’m sorry.”

“You used to joke like that before, right?” Yuri asked.

Benny nodded, bracing himself for Yuri’s reaction.

“Okay.” Yuri smiled. “I’m glad you don’t want any of my muffins, but maybe I’ll steal some of your biscuits. I do like bacon.”

The grin on his mate’s face was a far cry from the temper tantrum or frustration Benny expected. Well, at least he was in a good mood. Hopefully it would last through the whole discussion.

They sat in the living room, coffee all around, except for Yuri who wanted more milk to go with his muffins.

“So, the guy who attacked you is Yuri’s brother-in-law?” Ellis asked. “Why in the hell would he do that?”

Benny shook his head. “I don’t think he’s in his right mind. Something’s going on—and I have no idea what the hell it is.”

Dav was already on his phone. “But at least now we have some avenue of investigation. I’ll reach out to my contacts.”

Ellis put his coffee cup down. “And I’ll call Isiah. We’ll also get in touch with Velaku. In the meantime, though, let me see your back, Benny.”

Sighing, Benny lifted his shirt. Ellis peeled back the biggest bandage.

“These look pretty good. You need to head in before the skin grows over the sutures, though.”

“I planned on it. Yuri needs to see the doctor too.”

“I do?” Yuri made a face. “Great.”

Benny sighed. “Remember, Dr. Vancould wanted to check the spot where they’d put the port in again.”

Yuri sulked. “I remembered… I just hope you forgot.”

“Humor him”—Benny leaned forward and kissed Yuri, sucking on his full lower lip—“okay? It won’t take long, and then I have a surprise for you.”

Visiting Author: Jon Keys with Crossfire

I’m glad to get a chance to visit your blog, Cia! I’m really enjoying visiting with other authors. Crossfire is part of the Men in Uniform anthology from Torquere Press and a story I really like. But before we get to the good stuff, I thought I’d talk a little about why I made the jump from reader to writer. I’m a relative newbie at the whole writing thing, but I’ve been reading on-line fiction since it first appeared. I’ve been on the Internet since Netscape and GOPHER (for those of you who weren’t born then, go Google it. Go ahead, I’ll wait.). My first programming class was in Fortran and we used punch cards. Okay, now I feel really old.

So, why did I start writing. Well, I really like rural/country settings. I grew up on the small ranch in Oklahoma, so that was pretty much my world for the first half of my life. But I would read through most of the stuff I was finding and thought ‘those guys sound dumb. Not everyone who lives in the country is a stupid redneck’.

At first I just ignored those stories, but after a while it started bugging me. Eventually, I decided I could do better than that, and started hammering out the first story. In the beginning I had no intentions of doing more than a few chapters of two guys falling for each other. I wrote the first chapter, and waited. I was pretty terrified of what people would say about the writing. I could just imagine being ripped to shreds. But after a week or so, I worked up enough courage to punch send.

Well that was the first chapter of Wrangler Butts, which still exists on Gay Author, Nifty, and Literotica. I didn’t get roasted for those first rough chapters. I got words of encouragement and support. Other people could relate to what I had written. Score! So that first hopelessly head hopping chapter was the beginning of what is a three “book” series and soon to be fourth when I continue the saga as part of my Wednesday Flash series titled Double Trouble.

I owe a lot to those early supporters. They were the first to plant the thought of being published. But I did think about it and finally decided I wanted to take the next step. Crossfire is the first in 2014, but over the next year I have contracts for the release of another short story, two novellas and two novels. Things have changed over the past few years.

So that’s a short explanation of why I started putting my ideas down on paper. I hope everyone enjoys Crossfire as much as I loved writing it. ~ Jon ~

Cover for Crossfire ebookStory Synopsis: Rick Anthis, a forty-five year old veteran of the Colorado State Police, and his husband, Gabriel Thorkelson, a deputy sheriff in a nearby county, enjoy the peace of their suburban Boulder home. Until three gunshots rip through the tranquil neighborhood and Rick witnesses the kidnapping of his buddy, eight year old Jacob.

The clues are sparse until Gabe reminds Rick of something Jacob had said. Rick has a starting point. He and his CSI team locate the remote hideout, only to find the the kidnappers are gone, and Gabe is missing too.

Story Excerpt: Rick dried the last dish and handed it to Gabriel to put away. Gabriel settled the last plate into the white cabinets. He loved their house and the quiet, older neighborhood it was in. He hoped Mark and Rachel could work out their issues, keeping Jacob in the forefront.

Rick put his hand around Gabriel's slender waist. He's as sexy as he was in college. Damn just being next to him makes me randy. Releasing Gabriel, Rick folded the dishtowel carefully and laid it beside the sink. "Supper was great. You're a damn fine cook."

Gabriel snickered and spun to pop Rick with a wet towel. "It should taste good. Your mother gave me herbs from her garden the last time we visited."

"Mom's just trying to fatten me up. I'm kind of skinny for a forty-three year old Greek man."

The towel snapped against Rick's butt again and he grabbed at it. Gabriel danced away, his face lit with delight. "Where does that leave me?"

Rick swept Gabriel up and kissed him. "It leaves you in my arms, just where you should be."

Rick paused as he remembered the note in his pocket. Leaving his hand on the small of Gabriel's back he reached in his shirt pocket and fished out a small piece of yellow paper. He gripped it between two fingers and dangled the sheet in front of Gabriel.

"Speaking of, I found another note in my lunch."

Gabriel studied the symbols on the page as if he'd never seen them. "Huh, what do you think that means?"

Rick smiled. "I know what it's meant the last dozen times I found one in my lunch."

"Really? And what was that?" "It meant I was going to be exhausted the whole next day."

"You don't say. Let me see that." Gabriel took the paper from Rick's hand and appeared to study the content. "Looks like Native American symbols. Hmm, maybe 'bear' and 'hunt'." He smiled at Rick with a glimmer in his eyes. "Are we going on a bear hunt this fall?" Gabriel reached up and tugged on the short hair coming from the top of Rick's T-shirt. The slight touch shifted his libido into high gear.

He nuzzled his face against Gabriel's throat and sighed at the spicy fragrance that curled through his nostrils. Rick slid his hand under Gabriel's shirt; the rub of his chest hair on Rick's palm ignited his desire. "What's the sign for otter? Because I think I need to hunt one of those little furry things." I still can't believe Mom gave Gabe my Eagle Scout pictogram project.

Author Bio Jon Keys’ earliest memories revolve around books; with the first ones he can recall reading himself being “The Warlord of Mars” and anything with Tarzan. (The local library wasn’t particularly up to date.) But as puberty set in he started sneaking his mother’s romance magazines and added the world of romance and erotica to his mix of science fiction, fantasy, and comic books.

A voracious reader for almost half a century, Jon has only recently begun creating his own flights of fiction for the entertainment of others. Born in the Southwest and now living in the Midwest, Jon has worked as a ranch hand, teacher, computer tech, roughneck, designer, retail clerk, welder, artist, and, yes, pool boy; with interests ranging from kayaking and hunting to painting and cooking, he draws from a wide range of life experiences to create written works that draw the reader in and wrap them in a good story.

Wednesday Briefs: Lost Inside Chapter 23

Today's flash is inspired by the prompt: You have to crawl before you walk. That's so apt in my story, too! I hope you guys really enjoy this week! There might be a twist. Maybe. Read on to find out!! LOL

Lost Inside Chapter 23

Yuri jerked up in bed, suppressing a hiss. His head throbbed, and flashes from his nightmare kept coming at him. Good thing Benny was sleeping on his stomach facing away. He mighta woken his mate up, and then Benny would make him talk about stuff.

He was tired of talking.

A drink. That's what he wanted. Yuri cautiously climbed off the bed. The lights from outside the bar shone in the window and lit up the room so he wouldn't bonk into anything. He slinked through the piles of clothes thrown all over the floor. No wonder the room smelled so strongly of his mate¾he never picked up his dirty clothes!

Then again, Cleara always nagged at him to pick up his stuff too.

Yuri rummaged around behind the bar. Ahh. Whiskey. He poured a couple of finger's worth and put the bottle back. He debated going in the kitchen for ice, but decided not to. He needed to figure out all the crap bubbling up in his head.

Not all of it made sense. He kept seeing things and people. Their names would flash in his head, and then go away again. People singing, people happy, and then people screaming. He saw Benny a lot, and he liked those dreams, but he missed the sparkle in his mate's eyes when he saw him for real. Benny was so different.

Sad. Angry.

He still loved Yuri though.

Yuri hugged one arm around his chest and sucked down a drink of whiskey. He stared at the pictures on the half-wall next to the bookshelves. They were just regular photos tacked up but he hadn't looked at them before.

Wow. Benny had been following him around for a long time. Yuri leaned in close to see one pictures of him in a tree.

"What're you doing?"

Yuri whirled and let out a startled eep. His heart raced.

"Uh. Okay." Benny flicked an ear and raised one eyebrow at him from the bedroom door.

"You scared me!" Yuri's face was hot. He tried to ignore the sound he'd made. "I almost spilled my drink!"

"Are you drinking soda? Or ginger ale? Is your stomach upset? Do you feel okay? Is it your head?" Benny hurried out of the bedroom and over to him.

"I'm fine."

Benny sniffed. "Is that… whiskey?"

Yuri took a big drink. "Yes."

His mate frowned. "Why are you drinking whiskey at four in the morning?"

"If I tell you, are you gonna freak out?"

"Why would I freak out?" Benny asked.

Oh, he hated that. "Don't answer a question with a question! It's rude, Cleara says." Yuri scowled.

"Sorry. I mean, I'll try not to."

That was probably the best he was going to get. Yuri wandered away from the picture wall over to the couch. How should he say it?

"I keep seeing things," he blurted out. He blew out the rest of his breath and slumped on the couch. "Holy shit! Cold!" He jumped back up.

Maybe he should've put some of those clothes on that were on the floor.

Benny didn't laugh at his goof. Yuri bit his lip.

"What do you mean, you keep seeing things?" Benny spoke slowly, like Yuri was stupid or something.

"Things. In my dreams. Like, memories and stuff. What, did you think I meant I saw dead people or something?" Yuri scoffed.

"I wasn't sure what you meant. Don't get snippy, just talk to me."

Yuri sighed. "I'm tired of talking."

Benny reached around him and grabbed a blanket off the back of the couch. He spread it out and then sat down. "I know." He gestured for Yuri to sit down too. "But if you don't talk to me about it, I don't know what's going on with you. If we don't tell the doctors, they can't help make you better."

"I'm tired of the tests and doctors, too." Yuri knew he was whining, but he didn't care. He drained the rest of the whiskey out of his glass. "I just wanna… I wanna…."

"What?"

"Why can't we just be normal? Why can't we be mates and do stuff, and live happily ever after too? Everything sucks." Yuri pushed at his temple where the throbbing was coming back.

Benny reached up and took the glass out of Yuri's hand and set it on the table. He grabbed Yuri's hand and tugged. Yuri let his mate pull him down onto the couch, nestling between Benny's legs and leaning against his chest.

"We are mates, and we do… stuff. Is there something else you want to do?" He rubbed his fingers along the bridge of Yuri's nose, along his forehead, and drew circles back into his hair.

"I wanna get a job," Yuri murmured. What Benny was doing felt so good. "I want you to not have to take care of me like I'm a kid. I'm not."

"Oh, stuff like that." Benny kept massaging.

"Uh-huh."

"Well, if you talk to me and the doctors, then they might be able to make the other stuff happen, Yuri. You have to crawl before you walk, though. We need to know what's going on with you. I want to know, I promise."

Yuri sighed. "Like what?"

"What was your dream about? It must be bad, if it made you get up and drink on your own."

"You were sleeping too good to wake up."

His eyes slid shut.

"What did you dream,  Yuri?"

"About my mom and dad. We were alone¾on our way to see the elders. I was mad, 'cause my dad was making me go meet someone about mating to cement an alliance between Clans. I didn't want to. My lip hurt, 'cause Dad hit it and hissed at me to shut up or he'd marry me off to some vicious Alpha, like Yuisi."

Benny paused in the middle of the massage. "Who's Yuisi?"

"My brother." Yuri wiggled his head on Benny's shoulder. "Don't stop," he whined. His head was just starting to stop hurting.

eBook Review: It's Complicated by L.A. Witt

It's Complicated (Tucker Springs, #7)It's Complicated by L.A. Witt
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Okay, so I had the hardest time rating this eBook. I thought 2.5 stars for the plot. It's annoying--basically. Passive aggressive relationship stories drive me bonkers. I thought we'd see more of them working through their problems, not have new ones dumped on top that ramped up the angst factor to "Seriously?" factors for me. Which this did. I don't want to spoil the story... but read the story blurb and it's pretty much already done for me. The marketing basically gives you the ENTIRE plot. The only thing you don't get to see is the ending. For me, that makes it even more annoying because it feels like every surprise we're suppose to learn along with the characters is info bombed before we even get there. It lessens the impact of the emotional climaxes along the plot arc, which divorced me from the characters in a BIG way.

Oh, we love each and want to make it work so we're starting over--Boom! Already know that. Great sex still works--Boom! Already know that. Ex that still works with main character gets pregnant--Boom! Already know that. Ex wants to bail from the business and the city, omg, what will he do--Boom! Already know that.

The only things we don't get to see beforehand are the way Brad's job contributes to the resolution (though it was obvious as soon as I figured out what he did) and the actual decisions made at the end on how to make things work. Which again, isn't any big thing--it becomes pretty much obvious.

This eBook went up to 3 stars because I did feel L.A. Witt's basic writing ability to craft sentences and flow is good. I also got a tad teary eyed during the climax emotional scene before the resolution and ending. Pulling me into the story to feel even that much for the characters when I felt divorced from the plot because I already knew it took some skill. Overall, though this type of plot isn't my favorite, I'd have enjoyed it--if it didn't feel like I'd already read the CliffsNotes version.
