M.A. Church with Pure!

Morpheus, god of dreams

Hey, everyone! Pure is the final book in The Gods series and will be released June 12th by Dreamspinner. This is a series about love, gods, and the issues all three couples in it face.

Book three is about Zygi and Mo, otherwise known as Morpheus, god of dreams. Zygi is a dom who is tired of the endless scenes. Mo is a sweet, shy god who wants nothing more than to be loved for who he is.

While the couple battle through several issues, there are Zeus and Ares, both of whom have their own reasons to break up the couple … and things come to a head in the worst way. Can Zygi accept the god of dreams? Or will he turn his back on the lovable Morpheus?

According to Greek mythology, who was Morpheus?
Morpheus was one of the primeval gods, descended from Nyx, the dark goddess of night who was the mother of everything mysterious and anything that was inexplicable—such as death, disease, dreams, ghosts, dreams, witchcraft, and enchantments. The drug Morphine which, as a side effect, can cause hallucinations, was named after Morpheus. Morpheus was the eldest son of Hypnos, the God of sleep. Morpheus had the ability to take on the appearance of a mortal in dreams. He was the god who relayed messages from the gods and prophecies of the future.

Symbols of Morpheus
The symbols of Morpheus were wings and poppies. These are often featured in depictions of the god of dreams. According to Greek mythology, there was a garden of poppies at the entrance of his palace in the Underworld. Poppies symbolized death, eternal sleep, and oblivion. The hypnotic properties of the poppy plant have long been used to treat insomnia, allowing sleep to people who have trouble sleeping.

Blurb:

Zygi Wyatt is an intimidating dom, but he yearns for love just like the next man. However, finding a partner who isn’t scared of his size is no easy task. The easygoing Mo seems like the answer to his prayers.

Love is the stuff of dreams. Ask the god Morpheus—he knows all about it. Mo wants Zygi in a forever kind of way, but he has to be sure of Zygi’s love before he claims him for his mate and reveals his true self.

Unfortunately, Zeus is growing increasingly unhappy with Morpheus, and Ares is determined to throw a monkey wrench into everything. Zygi and Mo will have to brave the wrath of the gods to make their dreams come true.

Excerpt:

“Zygi.” Mo was breathing heavily. “Can we go, please?”

“Where do you want to go?”

Heavy-eyed and breathless, Mo struggled to speak. “My place, your place—I don’t care. I just want to go… somewhere private. Can we go to your home? Can we do that?”

“Look at me,” Zygi demanded, his voice low. “What exactly are you saying? I need to be absolutely sure I know what you want. Are you asking me to take you to bed?”

“I—I… can we just play? Explore some more? Please?”

“But not go all the way, right? You’re not ready to fuck.”

Mo wanted to beat his head against the thick ice table. He couldn’t go to bed with Zygi until the man knew who Mo was. He wouldn’t give his virginity to anyone but his mate. Zygi had to know, to understand that, before Mo went to bed with him. Zygi would need to claim him when he made love to him that first time. He needed Zygi to look in his eyes and say the words “mine” as his dick traveled up his channel.

“I’m sorry, Zygi, I’m not—I’m not ready, yet. But I want you to take me to bed, that awesome bed of yours, and play.”

Zygi set a new record getting their heavy coats off and pulling Mo out of the bar. Mo was impressed. He had no idea such a big man could move so fast. In no time flat, Zygi had him in his truck, buckled in, and on the way to the casino. The drive was silent except for a few moans from Mo. Once Zygi parked, Mo scrambled out of the truck. Zygi waited for him, and they walked to the elevator together. As soon as the door slid shut, Zygi pulled the remote from his pocket and held it up for Mo to see. Zygi made Mo watch as the remote was switched on low again. With a soft gasp, Mo grabbed hold of the railing and shot Zygi a desperate look.

Zygi kept the vibrations on low so Mo could handle it, but Mo still watched the floors change with an urgency that had Zygi chuckling. After a few seconds, he shut the plug off, and Mo sighed. As soon as they were through the front door of his penthouse, Zygi guided Mo straight back to the bedroom with a persistent hand to his back. As they walked through the bedroom door, Zygi turned the plug on to a higher setting.

“You remember your safewords?”

“Aaah, yes. ‘Yellow’ to slow down and ‘red’ to stop.” Mo jerked from the vibrations.

“Right. Use them only if you need to.” Zygi laid the remote on a nearby table. “Strip, now.”

Author bio: M.A. Church

M.A. Church lives in the southern United States and spent many years in the elementary education sector. She is married to her high school sweetheart and they have two children. Her hobbies are gardening, walking, attending flea markets, watching professional football, racing, and spending time with her family on the lake.

But her most beloved hobby is reading. From an early age, she can remember hunting for books at the library. Later nonhuman and science fiction genres captured her attention and drew her into the worlds the authors had created. But always at the back of her mind was the thought that one day, when the kids were older and she had more time, she would write a book.

By sheer chance she stumbled across a gay male romance story on the web and was hooked. A new world opened up and she fell in love. Thus the journey started. When not writing or researching, she enjoys reading the latest erotic and mainstream romance novels.

Wednesday Briefers: One Night Part 24

Ooh... some answers in this one. I chose a *ahem* thought *ahem* stimulating image for my prompt inspiration, lol. I hope you enjoy.

One Night

“So we’re still hiding out?” Bear flounced down on the couch opposite the front door of the house Kameron took him to.

“Yep. We still have to give our testimony to the grand jury tomorrow. Until then it’s lockdown.” Kameron dropped their bags he’d managed to get a patrolman to retrieve from their car. He handed Bear his laptop.

“I figured you’d want this, just in case your clients had any sudden website emergencies.”

Smiling up at him, Bear took it. “Yeah, thanks.”

Kameron sat next to him as he fired up the laptop. “I think most of my life is on my computer.”

Bear flinched when Kameron poked him in his side. “Hey, that tickles!”

“What am I, chopped liver?” The large man snorted. “I’m insulted,” his eyes grew round, “though hot damn, if he popped up on my screen every time I turned my computer on I’d be on there a lot too!”

A young man, dark haired with pouty lips held a white sheet just barely up over his hips as he stared out of the screen.

Bear blushed as the picture slowly faded. He shrugged and then smiled ruefully. So he had a little peekaboo fun when his computer came on. It was just the one he used at home, and the shot was from one of his favorite porn films, just before the guy dropped his sheet and showed just exactly how muscular he was as he screwed a pretty little twink against the slick wall of his shower.

“The whole chin thing is a bit goofy looking though.” Kameron framed his chin with his fingers. “Do I look good like this?”

“Oh shut up. It’s corny but he’s hot.” Bear hovered over a folder. “Wanna see his video?” Screw his clients … or rather, if he was lucky, Kameron would screw him. It still felt like his heart was about to pound out of his chest as he nervously waited for Kameron to come back safe and sound.

Kameron took the computer in his big hands and set it gently on the coffee table. “No, I don’t want to see his video. I’d rather to see you.” He pulled up Bear’s shirt, the warm trails of the back of his fingers made him shiver.

“Yeah ….” Kameron let out a sound of appreciation. “That’s what I want to see.” Bear arched and moaned when those strong fingers tweaked both of his nipples.

“This place has a bedroom, right?” Chills racing down his back made him shudder as Kameron rolled his nipples again. His cock was going to get bent in half if his jeans didn’t come off soon. He could see from the bulge in Kameron’s pants that he wasn’t any better off.

Kameron leaned down and captured his lips in a searing kiss; Bear sucked on the invading tongue. His hands went to the ridge hiding behind Kameron’s zipper. He rubbed firm circles with his palm. Kameron jerked away with a gasp. He stood up, and then pulled Bear up and towed him toward the hall.

***

“One night of hiding for just you and me, huh?” Bear snuggled with Kameron in the small double bed. The mattress was hard and the pillows were flat, but he was resting on Kameron’s chest. They smelled like sex and sweat, but he actually kinda liked it. Kameron swept a calloused hand down his back.

“Not our last night together, though.” He looked down at Bear. “Not by a long shot.”

***
Choika glared at him. Bear faltered. A gun was pointed straight at his forehead; the gangster had been armed by Paolo who stood behind the cruel gang leader pointing another gun at Kameron.

“No!” Bear sat up in the bed. His heart was racing and cold sweat trickled down his spine. “Ugh.” He wiped at the tears trickling over his cheeks.

“Hey,” Kameron rolled over. “What’s wrong?”

“Bad dream.” His throat was raspy, like that cry hadn’t been his first. “I need a drink.” Bear got up and stayed up. As much as he wanted to stay in bed and cuddle, he couldn’t just lay there. Intellectually he knew that there would be no one in the room when he testified by the D.A. and the jury, but fear wasn’t always rational.

Bear about hit the roof when they walked into the courthouse. “Was that Paolo?” He could have sworn he just saw Kameron’s ex-partner walk around the corner of the long hall opposite the way they came in. “Kameron? Why would he be here?”

Kameron put an arm around his shoulders. “He was probably arraigned. Don’t worry; even if he was here, he’s gone now. We’re both safe, okay?”

Nerves made Bear too nauseated to eat breakfast and the coffee he’d had wasn’t helping. It was like a ball of snakes were writhing in his stomach. He barely got through his testimony; the eyes of all of those men and women on him as he told them what happened, like a lurid story on the television for the entertainment, was just the beginning.

Trial would be so much worse.

Jimmy was there when Bear came out and waited with him while Kameron testified. He seemed anxious too, shifting his weight back and forth and pacing.

“Good; you’re done.” Jimmy began to hustle Bear and Kameron down the hall, away from the main entrance.

“Where are we going?” Bear asked. His ankle twinged. “And can we slow down?” Jimmy slowed down, but not because of Bear’s request. He turned and stopped at a non-descript brown door.

“Okay. So … you have to remember that we’ve been trying to bring Choika down for a long time,” Jimmy said. “Since before you even entered the Academy, Kameron.”

“I know that.”

Jimmy opened the door and ushered them in. Bear froze and then he was being shoved behind Kameron.

“What the fuck is he doing here?”

Jimmy ran a hand through his hair. “Things aren’t like you think.”

Lily Velden with Same Page! *Plus A Contest*

Today I have Lily Velden answering some personal questions (naughty phone calls, gasp!) and sharing news about her first ever eBook, Same Page. There's a contest at the end, so don't skimp on reading or you'll miss it!

Okay, first off … tell us about you!
Well, let’s see. I’m a Venutian sent to earth to study the human race… LOL, sorry, couldn’t resist!
Perhaps the first thing you should know about me is that my offbeat sense of humor gets me into trouble all the time!
What can I say? I love to read. I love to write. I love movies and ballet and live theater. I love walking in strange cities and sighing over the architecture. I love creating something out of nothing—hell, I need that! Who am I kidding? Without my creative outlet I get depressed!

What are you wearing?

When I read this question, Cia, I burst out laughing—it brought back memories.

Many years ago I had a regular obscene caller who would make three calls to me in quick succession while I was at work. In the first there would just be silence; the second he would breathe heavily, and on the third he'd ask me in a very husky voice what I was wearing.

It went on for months and I'd get so frustrated with every set of calls as I never seemed to be in a position to be able to answer him—there was always someone standing nearby who would be able to hear me.

One day, luck finally smiled on me, and when he got to his third call and breathed his question down the phone line at me, I purred back, "Nothing and it feels wonderful."

He never phoned me again!

Today, luckily for you and your readers, I'm not naked!

I'm wearing jeans, sneakers, and a long-sleeve white Henley shirt!
Vanilla or Chocolate?
Um, caramel! I love it any which way you want to serve it—hot, cold, as a candy, on ice-cream, poured over a pudding, in a tart, as a milkshake, or a pie. I can be bribed with offers of caramel! Want a free copy of Same Page? Just get me some CARAMEL!!!!

Do you make your bed?

Yes, she says with a squeak—I think I’ve been a mum too long!

Okay, on to the authoress stuff! When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Ooh, that’s a tougher question than it first appears to be. I still feel shy to call myself one! What I can say is that I’ve always loved to write and tell stories. Along with drawing, it was my escape, my pleasure, and my coping mechanism from a young age.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I think if they handed out medals for tweaking, I’d be in the running for a gold!
I constantly read over what I’ve written, juggling the word order of a sentence, changing a word here and there, deleting a sentence, adding a new one. I’m constantly trying to perfect what I’ve written—just ask the Dreamspinner editors!—I really need to learn when to stop.

What do you think has been the toughest criticism you’ve ever received? The best compliment?
The toughest criticism I ever received ended up being the best lesson I ever learned, and the person who made the criticism is now a friend. Rather than get defensive or take offense, I saw it as an opportunity to learn.
There are a few concepts in romantic fiction that fascinate me. One being, the idea of there being only one ‘soulmate’ for want of a better word, for each person. Another is the concept of how people can deceive themselves because they don’t want to confront certain things about themselves for a variety of reasons. Perhaps out of fear, societal or family pressures, religion etc. An example would be a man telling himself he’s straight when deep down, he’s attracted to men.
My now friend blasted me for having the openly gay character in one of my stories not realize the not-so-openly gay man fancied him, and through that ignorance hurt the not-so-openly gay man. He wrote to me how most real-life gay men would see the signs, even if the other was deeply embedded in the closet, as their homosexuality makes them more finally attuned to unconscious signals and body language etc. He was very articulate and I’ve never forgotten his words—he taught me to never take anything for granted, or to make assumptions about how a man would react based on worn out stereotypes and cliches. He taught me to really think about what a character would say, do, think etc. Thank you, S – I owe you BIG TIME!
As to the best compliment, this may sound odd, but it was a lovely lady who has read The Race is On (Book 2 of How the Light Gets In). She said she struggled to remember reading anything that made her weep as much as one particular scene did. She told me I’d written the character’s pain so beautifully that she cried so much she couldn’t see her computer screen. Her words did, and do, mean a great deal to me as that scene was very important to the character (I can’t tell you which one or it will give things away) and therefore to me. (I actually keep her correspondence in my inbox for when I have one my confidence crises!) I just feel very relieved that I didn’t let the character down by not being sensitive and eloquent enough to touch the reader.

For your eBook coming out: How did you come up with your title?
The name of the series, How the Light Gets In, is from the Leonard Cohen quote: “There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
From the first moment I read the quote, it’s resonated with me. For me, it has special meaning, and it is around those words that I based the whole story. So far, there are two books in the series—Same Page, which is due out on the 14th June, and The Race is On, which has just completed the editing process at Dreamspinner and is due out in a month or two.(A third book is being written as we speak)
Same Page came from the motivation of the two main characters, Jaxon and Liam—to be on the same page!

If it were to be made into a movie, who could you see playing the lead characters?
To select an actor to play Liam is easy—his appearance was inspired by Robert Pattinson, as I’m mesmerized by his bone structure and pale English skin.
I’m an artist as well as an author (hence my need to design my own covers!) I have a love of life-drawing and portraiture and so Robert’s skin tone, jaw line, cheek bones etc. won me over from the moment I saw him playing Cedric Diggory in one of the Harry Potter movies!
Jaxon, is a little more difficult. Originally, I pictured him as having dark curly hair and being Scottish! That might have been because I had a crush on Gerard Butler at the time…
But, somewhere along the line, the blighter morphed into a blond Texan on me! A young Matthew McConaughey would fit the bill. As I write this, I’m picturing Matthew in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. Hmm, and in a Time to Kill with Sandra Bullock.

What sort of coffee would your characters order? Black coffee or some half-caff soy protein drink?
LOL, Liam actually enjoys a cup of tea! He is a Brit, after all! He does like the cappuccinos that Jaxon makes him, though. Jaxon loves to make his own coffee – cappuccino for him too!

So, now that this is coming out, what’s next in the pipeline? There’s a sequel, right?
Yes, there’s a sequel! It’s called The Race is On and it will hopefully be ready for release in July or August.
There’s also a third book in the series which I’m currently writing, but I can’t say too much about it or I’ll give away things from Same Page and The Race is On.
I also have another manuscript I’m working on—yes, I’m guilty of writing more than one novel at a time! Think of a restaurant on a busy Saturday night with umpteen tables and umpteen conversations happening at once, and you’ve got a pretty good picture, or should I say audio??? inside my head—called Questions and Answers. It has two Art History lecturers—one American and one English—swapping jobs, homes, and cars for a semester as part of a new ‘partner’ relationship between their respective colleges. They learn some very interesting stuff about each other! It’s quite erotic in parts!

How’d you get involved with your publisher?
Research!
After much encouragement from friends, I finally plucked up the courage to submit something for publication, and my research suggested Dreamspinner Press was an excellent publishing house to be associated with. For aspiring writers of M/M fiction, I can’t recommend highly enough that you submit your manuscripts to Dreamspinner. They do what they say they’re going to do, they keep you informed, and perhaps, best of all, they hold your hand and treat your ‘baby’ with respect!
How the Light Gets In, both Books 1 & 2 was the first story I ever wrote, but it’s not the first thing I submitted. My first submission was a short story for the Dreamspinner anthology, Animal Magnetism. It’s called Stripped Bare and it’s about a potty-mouthed parrot that helps bring two men, Nick and Michael, together. (More guest at the dinner party called my brain!)
My next submission was a novella called Gay as Mardi Gras which came out in March, 2013 and tells the story of straight-boy, Jesse, whose Nan sends him on a gay cruise ship for a vacation. It’s a tad irreverent, but it’s all in fun, just a nice light-hearted tale.
Those acceptances gave me the courage to submit the two completed novels of How the Light Gets In: Same Page and The Race is On. I hope that some of your readers, Cia, will give Jaxon and Liam a chance to charm them—they’ve certainly kept me on my toes for 3 years! The dinner party going on in my head wouldn’t be complete without them!

Okay, thanks for the insight in Lily, the person and the author! Now let’s check out your release!!
Thank you so much for having me, Cia. It’s been an absolute pleasure!

He was like the only splash of color in a black-and-white photograph.
The man was beautiful.

Synopsis:
At an exhibition opening in Sydney, jaded Hollywood heartthrob Jaxon Moncrieff lays eyes on publicity-shy artist Liam Lassiter for the first time and is immediately captivated. But he doesn’t get far into their first conversation before he realizes what he’s feeling is attraction, which brings him up short. Jaxon has always been a womanizer.
Despite his reservations, Jaxon makes a play for Liam, but Liam has his own issues. Unlucky in love and orphaned at sixteen, he is reluctant to open his heart to anyone, and dismisses Jaxon out of hand.
Driven by a need he doesn’t understand, Jaxon organizes a return to Sydney to film his next project. If he can’t be with Liam, maybe they can be friends. Of course, that creates a whole new problem. Now Jaxon is falling in love for the first time. How can he move their relationship from friends to lovers without destroying the trust he’s worked so hard for?

Excerpt:
As usual, it was still early when I woke, so I closed my eyes and tried to slip back into the dreams I’d been having—dreams of soft auburn hair brushing over my torso and full, oh so kissable lips trailing moist kisses down my neck and chest. I twined my hands in the silky strands. Lower and lower went the kisses….
I sat bolt upright as the russet-framed face looked up at me from between my thighs, and my lust-filled gaze was met with the autumn eyes of Liam Lassiter.
Holy fucking shit! What the hell? I was panting, my arousal painfully obvious. Don’t panic. No need to panic, I chanted to myself in an effort to calm my pounding heart. Jesus, Moncrieff, one knock back, and now you’re obsessed?
Refusing to dignify my aberrant dream by jacking off, I imagined dead puppies and my grandmother naked in an effort to deflate my rock hard cock.
Forget it, Buddy. No way on God’s green earth am I going to give you a treat when you pull crazy shit like that! What the hell’s going on with you? You’re getting excited over a guy now? I muttered silently to my cock. Okay, now you really are losing it, Moncrieff. You are talking to your dick like it’s a real person… but fuck, go down, will you? Fucking wilt, you stubborn bastard!
I was a little horrified at the time it took me, and exactly how long I had to picture my nana naked, to will it away.
The best cure for my malady, I decided, was a strenuous workout. With a quick call, I ascertained that the hotel’s gym was currently empty and would remain that way for as long as I wanted my workout to last. Sometimes being a celebrity wasn’t so bad.
For an hour, I punished my body’s unconscious betrayal with a regimen of cardio and weights before heading back to my room to shower and dress in preparation for the first of six interviews I had to do before attending the premiere of my latest movie.
Alison was waiting for me when I emerged from my bedroom, my hair still a little damp.
“Mornin’, Tinker Bell,” I said with a smile, using my nickname for her.
Ally’s reply was to throw a cushion from the armchair nearest her. Knowing her as well as I did, I was prepared for her reaction and ducked in ample time, and the cushion fell harmlessly in the doorway to my bedroom.
“Careful, Tink, or you’ll get me a reputation for trashing hotel rooms!”
“Coffee. Where’s my coffee?” she groaned. “You know I have no sense of humor until I’ve had my coffee!”
I chuckled and walked barefoot to the kitchenette and made a cappuccino for myself and a latte for Ally. This was my one “star request”—I always asked for an espresso machine in my suite, as I liked to make my own coffee. When you drank as much of it as I did, you wanted it to be good, none of that instant crap.
Alison held the cup to her lips, inhaling deeply, her eyes closed in bliss. “God, JJ, if you ever fail as an actor, you could always get work as a barista! You make the best coffee.”
“That’s why I keep you on; you’re so good for my ego. Okay, Tink, lay it on me. Who’s up first?”
Ally went through my schedule with me in detail. Internally, I groaned. Six interviews, each lasting forty minutes, with a twenty-minute break in between and an hour for lunch.
“Okay, so I’m free from four until seven, when I have to be at the premiere?”
She nodded as she noisily drained the dregs of her coffee. I watched, amused, as she darted out her little pink tongue to lick the last of the flavor from her lips. Seeing my barely suppressed grin, she quirked her eyebrow at me.
“What? So I enjoy a good cup of coffee.”
“Whatever, Tinker Bell. I want you to ring Garrett Flemington and organize for him to come here at four or four thirty, as I want to talk to him about buying a couple of pieces from last night’s show. Oh, and some sandwiches and cakes and things would be nice too, please,” I said, trying to sound casual.
“Consider it done, fearless leader!” She saluted me, making no attempt to hide her knowing smirk. “Rather delicious, that Liam Lassiter, wasn’t he?” she added slyly.
“What on earth are talking about, Tink? So I like his art!” I defended.
“Of course you do,” came back her overly innocent reply. It was Alison’s turn to duck as I threw a cushion at her. “Careful, JJ, or you’ll get a reputation for trashing hotel rooms!” she squealed, throwing my words back at me.
I couldn’t help but laugh; she knew me so well. No surprise, really, considering we’d known each other since kindergarten. We were more like brother and sister than boss and employee, and I knew I could trust her implicitly.
I chose not to examine too closely her obvious ease at the thought that I might have found Liam attractive, deciding to save that essay of internal debate for later…

Changing Bunnies

Times change and with them the issues of the day. In 2004, a big issue was the 'threat' gay marriage posed to the country. Amendments were strategically placed on the ballots of several states, including the critical, must win, state of Ohio. The gay marriage 'bans' passed fairly easily and helped bring out the 'conservative' vote.  Don't ask don't tell was used to don't let fags stay in the military. And a gay athlete? They stayed in the closet until their playing days are over unless they want their playing days to be over.

No this isn't a post about politics or gay rights – thought it is Gay Pride Month so maybe it should be – rather it's about plot bunnies.  The changing times mean hot button issues no longer seem as 'hot.' I started writing Second Shot[1] in 2009. Back then, there no gay male professional athletes had come out during their playing days, only after. The military still had the ban on openly gay soldiers and gay marriage was available in a small handful of places only.

Many of the plots in M/M fiction revolved around closeted athletes, soldiers, and sons.  What if my teammates learn I'm gay? My parents will disown me. I'll be discharged if I come out.  Today, those themes seem a bit passé.  That's not to say that they don't still exist, but a story about a gay soccer player who is outed to his team and is accepted doesn't seem so fictitious now that Robbie Roberts has come out and is playing for the two time defending MLS champion L.A. Galaxy. His first game held no gay baiting, no name-calling. His sexuality was – happily – a non-issue.

The same can be said about gays in the military. Same sex weddings are being held for soldiers in military chapels with military personnel officiating. For more proof, one only needs to look at the You-Tube channel of RussMarine2014 the self styled "Your favorite gay marine" and his boyfriend to know that being an openly gay soldier isn't the stuff of fiction and our wildest dreams.

All that and we didn't really touch on gay marriage. (Has everyone noticed how close we are to having enough states ratify gay marriage that getting the needed 2/3 of the states to ratify a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage might not be possible anymore?)

So what does this say for the all those future bunnies? My hunch is that going forward, we're going to see more M/M romance/fiction where the issues that keep the MC apart has little or nothing to do with their being gay. It won't seem so unbelievable to write about an out baseball player and his love interest. The plot can be about distance or jealousy and not the player's need to remain closeted at all costs.

Sure the old plot lines will still exist. No one said the world is perfect. If it were, we wouldn't see the unacceptably high rate of suicide among LGBT teens. We wouldn't read about all the hate and bigotry directed toward LGBT people. But what we are seeing is that it's not the exception to be accepted anymore.

Interestingly enough, it might become harder to find compelling conflicts going forward. I think we can all live with that 'problem.' I know I can.

Purpose has an element of the old 'bunnies' in it; Ryan's family rejected him when they found out he was gay. That happens before he and Will meet. So while it is an element, it is a minor subplot to the story.

The shape of things to come? Maybe, but it depends on the story I suppose.

Forty years ago the Spirit of Vengeance—a Purpose—took William Morgan as its host, demanding he avenge the innocent by killing the guilty. Since then, Will has retreated behind Gar, a façade he uses to avoid dealing with what he’s become. Cold, impassive, and devoid of emotion, Gar goes about his life alone—until his tidy, orderly world is upended when he meets Ryan, a broken young man cast out by his family. Spurred to action for reasons he can't understand, Gar saves Ryan from death and finds himself confronted by his humanity.

Spending time with Ryan helps Will claw out from under Gar’s shadow. He recognizes Ryan is the key to his reclaiming his humanity and facing his past. As Will struggles to control the Purpose, Ryan challenges him to rethink everything he knew about himself and the spirit that possesses him. In the process, he pushes Will to do something he hasn't done in decades: care.

Excerpt:

“You had the chance to tell your family and you didn’t?”

“Twenty-five years is a long time.” Forty is even longer. “Too many questions would have been posed. It was easier to do it out of sight.”

“I suppose that makes sense.” Ryan ran his hand lightly over Will’s body for another couple of seconds, then he sat up. “Actually, no it doesn’t. I’d give anything to see my family again, and you ignore yours.”

Will knew he needed to say something. This wasn’t about him, it was about Ryan, but he had to think about his response. Rolling onto his side, he brushed a lock of hair from Ryan’s face. “It’s not that simple….”

“Sure it is. You pick up the phone and say, ‘Hey, I’m still here and I wanna talk.’ What’s complicated?”

Smiling, he shook his head. “No, I meant it’s not as simple as saying I’m ignoring my family. They can’t know about me, about It.”

“Why not?”

“Ryan….” He knew how exasperated he sounded, but Ryan still didn’t get it. Sure, he tried, but Gar was so different. How could he expect anyone to understand? “Everything comes back to It. I have to do what It wants. Agent Barrington is not the first one to try to track me, just the newest. Imagine if my family saw me, knew what happened? All seeing them would do is create a trail for someone to follow. It’s hard enough keeping one step ahead of everyone. If they knew my real name….”

Ryan bit his lower lip, then sucked on it after a moment. “You say I don’t get it. Will, you don’t get it. Change your appearance so you look older, or make up a story. Tell them you’re working for the government and this is what happened. That you’re an experiment gone wrong… or right.”

So much passion for something so remote. But Ryan did make a good point. He didn’t have to show up looking like the Will who disappeared. Maybe…. “If I agree to call and meet them, will you come with me?”

“You… you want me to come with you?”

His first thought was to say, “It’s your idea,” but he caught himself. Ryan needed to be included, not put on the spot. “Yes.”

Ryan’s lips slowly curved up until it was a full smile. Will found it infectious and joined him. “So, will you?”

Leaning in, he brought his lips to Will’s ear. A gentle kiss later, he said, “Of course.”

After a moment’s pause, Ryan twisted so his back was pressed against Will’s body. Wrapping his arms around his companion, Will tried to forget what he’d promised to do. It could wait a day.

The feeling of peace Ryan projected left Will drowsy. Content to lie wrapped together, he cleared his mind, ready to just sleep. Ryan’s breathing announced he was in similar state.

It chose that moment to make its presence known again.
