Wednesday Briefs: One Night Part 15

Hey all. More Bear and Kameron, yay! This week there were a bunch of prompts; I chose to include a whining diva as my choice ... can you guess who it is? :P LOL Read on to find out.

One Night Part 15

“Jimmy’s okay, right?” Bear asked Kameron. They were finally going to see his brother and Kameron could see how nervous Bear was. The drugs were keeping him from feeling too much pain but transferring into the wheelchair with his broken ribs had left Bear’s forehead sweaty. His face was pasty and he was already grimacing.

Kameron nodded. They’d been visited by Loren and John and a few of the guys in their precinct but everyone left after dinner. “You don’t have long before visiting hours are over, and then you both need to be in bed resting, so let’s go,” said the nurse who’d helped Bear. “You’ll see, Officer Orveng will be just fine.”

Wearing hospital scrubs to replace his ruined clothes, Kameron led the way gingerly to the room next to theirs, nodding at the two cops on duty outside their doors. It hurt every time he had to move his chest and stomach, which pretty much meant every breath he took. He stretched to open the door to Jimmy’s room.

Fifty-three. It had taken fifty-three stitches to close up all the stab wounds and cuts on his torso. Chaska was going to fucking pay when Kameron testified.

“Here, let me get that.” The officer leaned over to open the door.

“Thanks.”

Jimmy’s eyes opened when they came in. They were dull but he smiled at Bear. “Hey,” he croaked. “You look like shit.”

Bear snorted, then pressed one hand against his ribs gently, his lips going white. “Fuck.”

“Be careful.” The nurse patted Bear gently on the shoulder. “Ten minutes guys, then you all need to get some sleep.” She left the room.

Jimmy slowly turned his head and looked at him. “Hey man. Heard what happened.”

“Yeah, your brother saved us both. Chaska used me for carving practice but Bear kept his cool and figured out how to get help. He even knocked the fucker and one of his goons out with a hurt arm and ribs.”

“Course I’m paying for it now.” Bear was slumped in the wheelchair as much as the wrapping around his ribs would let him. “I look awful.”

“Whining diva.”  The way Jimmy was squeezing Bear’s hand belied the insult.

“I’m glad you’re going to be okay, Jimmy.” Bear looked at his brother, his eyes shiny. “We were really worried about you. You scared the shit out of all of us, Jimmy.”

“Ditto, once John told me what happened once you guys were on your way here.”

Kameron made his way to the chair between Bear and Jimmy, sitting down gingerly. “We’re gonna be here for a bit, then the Chief wants us all off somewhere hidden, I think.”

Jimmy didn’t look any happier than Bear. “This is my job. I’m not hiding from the bastards just because they hurt me.”

“They hurt you because Chaska thinks I know where his drugs are, even though I have no fucking clue. I don’t want anyone to be in the line of fire, Jimmy. I know we’re going to be out of here before you’re discharged, but damn it, I need you to be safe just as much as you need me to be.”

Bear was panting by the time he was done snapping at Jimmy. Kameron leaned over and rubbed the arm that was back in the sling. It hurt, stretching like that, but it was worth it when Bear took a small breath and then let it out, closing his eyes.

“Jimmy won’t be going back on the job anytime soon either, babe. John promised he’d kick his ass if he tried and you know Loren will.” Kameron had gotten to know everyone quite well over the last few weeks. It was something else, being a part of these guys. He’d never connected with his old partner the way he had with his new ones.

He sat there quietly while the brothers talked for a few more minutes. If he and Bear had to leave town, and this Chief had told them that was probably their best bet, he wanted to take him somewhere nice. There was a little town on the coast he’d heard about from a friend in the academy a few years back that spent every summer there growing up. He’d raved about the cabins on a really remote private beach.

Kameron could see him and Bear getting some fresh air and sun, plus some much needed alone time. They hadn’t had time to really talk once Bear decided to forgive him before the shit hit the fan. They were due a few days of peace and fucking quiet.

There was a knock on the door and Bear jumped and then hissed. The nurse came in. “Just me guys; sorry, but it’s time to go.” Bear squeezed Jimmy’s hand one last time and then sighed.

“See you in the morning, okay?”

Jimmy nodded. He yawned. “I’ll be here.”

Kameron stood up, wobbling a little as every damned slice on his chest burned. The numbing medication they’d shot up the wounds with before they stitched him up was wearing off. “Night man.”

Holding up a finger, Jimmy stopped him. “You take care of my brother, you hear? I guess you guys work pretty well together, even if that wasn’t what I thought would happen when I asked you to start dating him.”

Bear rolled his eyes. “Which was the stupidest thing anyone has ever thought up, by the way. I’m going to get you back one of these days.”

“You’re welcome to try.” Jimmy rubbed at his eyebrow with one finger, his middle one, of course.

The nurse unsuccessfully smothered a laugh. “All right, men, let’s go.”

Once they were back in their rooms and in their beds, Bear sighed. “We’re going to all be okay, right Kameron?”

“Yeah, Bear. We will.”

Kameron hated being in separate beds. He was definitely booking that rental just as soon as they were sprung from the hospital with their too narrow to share beds.

Love Has No Boundaries: Teaser #1

Hey guys! I'll be working on Adverse Effects this week, and of course I'll flash on Wednesday, but I wanted to let you in on the project I've had ongoing for a little bit for the MM Romance Group Love Has No Boundaries event. I will be bringing bdsm themed contemporary paranormal story involving a descendant of a Greek daimon and a hot guy in a leather jacket with luscious lips to die for who needs to learn who he is and what he wants. This'll end up being a novella, at least! I'll be posting teasers and small excerpts until it posts on Goodreads. You should check out the group, if you're not already a member, and definitely swing by the topic I chose to check out the SIZZLING HOT pic inspiration for one of my characters!

Teaser #1

He’d been in the lifestyle for some time but his particular ability made it difficult to want to play over the last year. One by one, the subs he’d guided through the scenes to their subspace and sent soaring the bliss beyond had thanked him, usually on their knees with their cum still decorating their bodies … and then found someone else that fit the needs his ability allowed them to realize.

He always knew what they needed, but none of them ever needed him.

Weekly Review: Himiko Bonding

Bonding (Himiko, #1)Bonding by C.B. Conwy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved this eBook. The take on the alien culture, the bonding, the communication between Matt and Pietr was incredible. The way two cultures clashed seemed so much more realistic than the fluffy bunny alien stuff I'd read a lot of. It's not often that I can read a sci-fi/fantasy story and say 'This is real!' but those who favor the genres will know what I mean.

CB Conwy crafted a story that not only made sense, sometimes I felt like I could step out my door into the same world where Matt and Pietr were facing all the challenges shared in Himiko #1, Bonding. I read this book start to finish and then immediately picked up and read the 2nd in the series.

It's not necessary to read book 2 to feel like the story is complete, but I felt like the two together back to back was the best way to read these. I would most definitely recommend both for purchase!

One Night Part 14

Hey guys. I know this year has been one excuse after another, but that's because one of the things I've been dealing with a terminal lung cancer diagnosis with the only grandma I really considered I had. Unfortunately, her health spiraled severely last week and I lost her last Friday. I'm still writing, still moving, because she wouldn't let life stop for her and she'd be pissed if I did. Still, it's a big emotional mess, so that's why I'm not as 'around' lately. When I bounce back fully, I promise the writing will be back fast and furious. Until then, thank you to everyone who comments that I haven't/don't reply to, and for the patience of all my readers that still come by my blog or one of the sites I post on.

Okay, on from the sad, personal stuff. This week I chose one of the photo prompts. It's not perfect, as you'll have to imagine all the damage poor Kameron took, but the mood on the image hit me as perfect for this scene. Enjoy!

One Night Part 14

The crescendo of sirens was faint when Bear and Kameron stumbled outside. “How?”
“Bar does … have an alarm.” Bear’s face was pale and sweat dampened his hair. “Panel … is in… the office. Fools … thieves.”
Kameron tried to support Bear, who couldn’t stand up straight. The liquid sounding gasping every time he breathed was making Kameron start to feel frantic. The adrenaline surging through his body let him ignore the cuts and slices dripping blood down his chest. They stumbled down the alley together.
The front of the bar was lit up but Kameron didn’t want to walk in front of those windows. He led them across the road and slid them behind a rank smelling dumpster from a restaurant. “We’ll hide here.”
His heart raced as they waited for the cops. He pulled off his shirt, hiding the white fabric. Leaning against the wall, he held his face in his hands, carefully cradling his broken nose. The white wall was rough against his back. Bear leaned against his thigh.
Kameron dropped one hand down and rubbed Bear’s head. “You doing okay?” he whispered in a rough voice.
“Fine.”
Bear was anything but fine. He shivered, a fine tremble, and he was still gasping shallow breaths. The sirens grew louder. Kameron watched through a narrow gap between the dumpster and the wall, staring at the alley across the street.
“Come on.” The cops were taking forever to show up. Kameron didn’t want Chaska or his men to get away, but he wasn’t going to risk them being found. He wouldn’t stop them if they fled before the cops showed up.
They’d have more than enough evidence to arrest the sons of bitches, if he could manage to keep them out of the sadist’s hands. He couldn’t believe Bear got them away from the son of a bitch, but he did.
The first black and white screeched to a half in front of the alley. Several more soon followed, cops in black uniforms getting out and crouching beside their vehicles. That was too many to be a response to a silent alarm.
“They must have figured out we disappeared from the hospital.” Of course Jimmy would have realized that they didn’t come by and something had to have happened. Bear nodded but didn’t speak. Kameron leaned down and helped him to his feet.
“I know you can’t really put your arms up, but keep your hands open and away from your pockets, okay?”
“O-okay.” Bear leaned against him as they limped out of the alley together. One of the men with their guns pointed at Capstone wasn’t in a uniform. The slim dark haired man turned when Kameron called out to him.
“Paolo.”
Kameron’s partner turned and smiled. “Oh thank fuck!” He waved at the officer that turned his gun on them. “Stand down. That’s my partner and Orveng’s little brother that were taken from the hospital.” He cussed when he stopped next to them, pulling out his cell.
“This is Detective Gomez. I need a bus at 4591 Gaston Avenue.”
***
Kameron and Bear were back in the hospital, in a room right next to Jimmy. Neither of them were injured enough to need ICU but the chief wanted everyone together and locked down. They had two officers outside their doors with orders not to move.
The chief had read Kameron the riot act as he was patched up. Bear hadn’t seen it; he’d been in x-ray getting his chest checked out. He’d come in at the end, wheeled in flat on his bed.
“Kameron told me what you did, son.” The older man, his face all stark bones and fine lines, leaned over Bear’s bed to speak to him. “That was some fine thinking.”
Bear tried to shrug and winced. “All… I could … think of.” The doctors given him some pain medication, but not much, because they were worried about his breathing being depressed.
“Well, it worked. We knew you were gone but there are a lot of Zbrane hideouts in the city. We had no idea where they would have taken you, but when your friend’s alarm company called, he came running.”
Smiling, Bear said, “I knew … he would.” He wasn’t that brave, but he’d known he had to get them out of there. No way was he gonna let that guy carve Kameron up anymore. There would be aftereffects of their ordeal to deal with, but he was fuzzy enough not to need to focus on it now. He blinked and it was a struggle to open his eyes.
“The drugs?”
Bear shook his head. “No … idea. I lied.”
Shaking his head, the cop raised one eyebrow. “Ballsy.”
He almost shrugged again but stopped himself. He didn’t need another stabbing pain in his ribs; it was hard enough to breathe.
“Well, you get some rest son; as soon as you’re able we’ll need your statement too. There will be officers outside your door and they’re not moving. Jimmy knows you’re here and he’s going to be fine too.”
The captain looked up at Kameron. “Stay with him every second. He does not go out of your sight, you hear me? You’re not going to be fit for duty for some time, but I’ll work something out and get you on paid leave.”
Kameron looked over at Bear. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Bear knew that he was talking about more than leaving the room. Zbrane was leaderless at the moment. Chaska had been arrested along with his men. That didn’t mean that he was safe in the long run.
His mind was too fuzzy to focus on all of that. It’d work out, somehow. He focused on Kameron’s smile.
“Me either.”
